Central New York is a big area. How long is your commute each way to/from work or school, mileage-wise and time-wise?
I drive from Cortland to the north side of Syracuse...comes out to 37 miles each way, 74 round trip. It takes me 36-38 minutes in quiet weather, depending how many lights I get stuck at in Cortland.
I know a lot of people that drive from Syracuse to Oswego (e.g., professors who live in Syracuse and teach at SUNY Oswego), and depending where in Syracuse they live it's anywhere from 40-45 miles each way, 80-90 round trip. From the people I've talked to, it's anywhere from 50 minutes to 1 hour to make that drive in quiet weather.
My personal opinion is that, if you work in Syracuse, there is no reason to commute more than 10-25 minutes. Otherwise, you are defeating one of the best advantages of living in CNY -- a short commute. My commute used to be 12 minutes garage to garage.

When I went there, I did notice that some profs lived in the Liverpool area, with some living in DeWitt, Onondaga Hill and Marcellus. I would think that Clay and Lysander(basically the Liverpool and B'ville SD's) around/near Routes 31 and 481 would be a happy medium. There is plenty of shopping in that area and it is about midway between Syracuse and Oswego.

Anywhere along Route 31 is basically a happy medium, but I know of several who live in the city of Syracuse, DeWitt, and even Manlius.
