A good friend of mine will be moving to the area, following his wife's job. Apparently he's had some tough luck finding a solid high tech job in the area with good benefits and market rate pay... I said I'd reach out and see if anyone knew of any specific companies to look at.
He's essentially a computer systems engineer/administrator with 4 years experience, masters degree, etc. A couple companies around the area extreme low-balled him in terms of salary or only offered limited benefits. Ie, offering 40s-50s.
Are there any strong high tech companies in the area that:
- Are stable
- Have a good work culture
- Care about their employees
- Have a fairly normalized work scheduled - ~40hrs/week most weeks
- Have good benefits
- Pay market rate for similar title/experience/education ~75-100k salaried
Thanks in advance, I'll pass any advice on. He has a good 6 months to look around and decide whether its worth it to find work here or continue his current position remotely.
Companies like Eaton, UTC or one of the colleges may work as well.
Also, is he willing to drive? I only ask that, because there may be some jobs in relatively close areas as well. Rome and Ithaca are are couple of places that come to mind. This may depend on where he would be coming from in the area too.

Many of the tech companies that service other companies are shady at best. I am very close to someone who has 20+ years experience and the same qualifications as your friend and is just barely scratching the $75k mark. There are a couple standout tech companies, but his best bet will be to find a company that is hiring for their own IT department.
Because so many of these companies go belly up, most are hiring based on where people have worked in the past and what type of customer base the employee can pull in with them.
If the tech company has the word "rescue"' in their company name, run as fast as you can. They are the worst in the area.

Good information and I was wondering if it would be better to look at IT jobs with a company or organization that has an IT department.
I would look at SU, area hospitals, and some of the bigger name companies in town. That is the only way you will get close to his salary requirements. IT based around meds or eds will be your best chance.
I'm not personally familiar with these companies but the following links may be helpful.
1.) Envisage Systems - Ithaca, NY-based company that recently expanded into downtown Syracuse and leased about 20,000 Sf of office space. Envisage Systems – Careers
2.) ShoreGroup - New York City-based company with a sizable presence in Syracuse. Last year, the company announced it would add at least 100 jobs in CNY as its expands its software development group. Careers -
4.) Polaris Library Systems - Syracuse-based company that developes software and other programs and products for public and private library systems Employment | Polaris Library Systems
This is great information -- I really appreciate it. I'll forward it on to him. I think he mentioned talking to some casino in the area that was offering somewhere within that range.
