What is the community like in Syracuse NY? Is it a set of isolated burbs with stranger danger? Or is there any kind of bond toward the town itself? I've driven across America to many "Rust Belt" cities, and some had a poor economy without a community, while others had poor economies but held on to their community.

Thanks.

What exactly do you mean? You can find a sense of community in the area, if that is what you are looking for.

There are places, especially where I have grown up, where people find it absolutely awkward to talk about bettering a town with a strangers. Mind me, I'm not talking about things like Obummer or Republicans. What I am saying is that if I were to go certain cities, started a conversation with a pub, and turned toward something concrete like "Traffic in the area has been pretty terrible," people would then give you a wide-eyed glanced and state "Who are you? And why are you talking to me about Traffic in Syracuse?" The concept of any kind of greater community is lost in that statement.

Even though I am young, I have been to about half a dozen major cities, out of about a dozen, which were like this, some of them were more obvious (Orlando, NOVA,) others much less obvious, though unsurprising (I won't insult them.)

Again. It's hard to believe for some people that Americans can be this...awkward. But as a Young Man, the 80s isn't even part of my consciousness, so there are people who haven't seen the nation transition fully. Things are very different, and yet people are caught up in a past that isn't anymore.

The fact that this question sounds weird is a good sign that Syracuse may have the kind of "community" for what I am looking for. A certain sense of pride for one's own city, rather then letting a name fall into the gutter.

Rephrasing the Question.

Do Syracusans care about Syracuse, or is it just an address for the Postal Service? (More and more small and large "cities" fall into the latter.)

PS: I hate having to ask this question, but when I've been around as much as I have, its an inevitable nasty part of prospecting a place to start up business. Half the people feel offended, the other half look at me as Naive for not realizing the lack of community.

You may get a mix of reactions. Some will display pride and look to help improve things in the area. Then, you'll have the "why are you here?" or whatever overused negative statement crowd. You may get those that are indifferent as well.
