Out of the 100 largest Metropolitan Areas Syracuse, NY is ranked 16th safest from Crime.
If you take out the metropolitan areas that are basically suburbs of major cities Syracuse would rank 10th safest Metropolitan Area in the United States.

It may actually be higher, as some of the areas ahead of it are really Metropolitan Divisions that are a part of a major metropolitan area(many are in the NYC area). So, in terms of metropolitan areas, it is higher according to that list.
Also, as you can see, the bigger Upstate metros are high on the list.
Understanding that the source link was removed by the MOD, I got a chuckle at Honolulu, HI being listed among the most dangerous. This article from 2023, for instance, lists Honolulu, HI as being the safest "large" metropolitical areas (for areas with a population of at least 300k).
I think a lot comes down to what kind of crime one is collecting and analyzing. There will be different conclusions based on the different categories are included and the weight that is given to each.

it could also be a matter of city proper versus metro area as well. i think the list in the OP is for the metro area, while that article appears to be for just the city proper itself.

Yes, you're right. The person who wrote that article didn't make it clear or didn't know the difference between metropolitan areas and cities.
Metropolitan Areas are used in my original post.
The Honolulu article using cities over 300,000 in population.
