There was an awful lot of them at the lake. I am not sure if that is always the case.

For some reason there are not many flies in the northern suburbs of Syracuse. I barely even see flies anymore. I remember growing up when flies used to enter our house. I haven't used a fly swatter for a fly in years.
phaelon56, you're right, it has been a very cool spring. I even found out today that one of my plants had rotted due to the lack of warmth in the past two months. Without the heat to warm the soil, some plants delayed growth which can lead to rot.
It probably doesn't help that I'm surrounded by lakes, swamps and marshes.
-The Clay marsh is only a couple miles to north.
-The Cicero Swamp is about 5 miles to east.
-Onondaga Lake is about 3 miles to the southwest
-Oneida Lake is about 5 miles to the northeast
-The Seneca River about 5 miles to the west
