Great points about how a "walkable" community can be great. that's why I think villages like Baldwinsville, Liverpool, North Syracuse, Marcellus and some others are underrated, because they are small, safe, but has enough of the things that many or most people need. For instance, I loved living near the village of Liverpool because you can go to Onondaga Lake Park, then if you want to go to the library, it right there. You can go to Nichols for gorcery shopping or hit up any of the restaurants in the village. There also some concerts at Johnson Park and a little carnival during the summer. You also have your choice of housing from apartment complexes to beautiful homes built in the late 19th century. You also can take the CENTRO bus to work or the mall if you like as well. So, I think you might find more and more people look to live in such areas in the near future to cut down on costs, while keeping a high quality of life.
This place sounds perfect. Where is it? How much would it cost to rent a studio or room? How much would it cost to buy a small 2 bedroom home or condo? What about Whole Food type of stores?

It is north of Syracuse. There isn't a Whole Foods up here, but Wegmans is a very good grocery store with a good selection. There is one down Vine Street/Taft Road from the village of Liverpool. It isn't walkable, but it is a very short drive from the village.
What does North of Syracuse mean? Do you know the zip code?
The zip is 13088 and it is just north of the city of Syracuse. 13088 covers areas outside of village, mainly in the town of Salina too. Here is a streetview of the village: http://goo.gl/maps/NIzpD

Another community in the area that comes to mind as being somewhat underrated is Auburn. While it can vary due to being a city, it has a solid Downtown that is walkable and that has seen some revitalization, a pretty low crime rate, is very close to a Finger Lake, generally affordable housing of various types and schools, while not the greatest, aren't the worst. There are some private options in regards to schools, but Tyburn Academy is a pretty strict and small Catholic HS. It is still close enough to Syracuse and has a lot of history too. There is also public transportation available as well.
