Hi!

I am driving up to SUNY Oswego from downstate. I'll be taking 81 north and would like to ask your opinion:

Wha is the best route to SUNY Oswego once I've entered the Syracuse area via 81?

Thanks in advance!

Take 81 North to 481 North. Actually, the exit says Oswego to get onto 481. Then, take that all the way into Oswego, where it eneds, and take a left onto Bridge Street(Route 104). That will take you right to the entrance of the campus, just outside of the city of Oswego.

Thanks! Is 481 also a highway, or will I be minding a lower speed limit? I'm looking at what might be a 7 hour drive, leaving very early to be on campus at 9:30. Are there any construction, rush hour, general traffic issues I should be aware of on 81 as I approach 481, or on 481? Thanks again

481 is mainly a 2 lane highway, with the exception of going through the city of Fulton. I think you will be fine driving through.

Just to make it clear, I meant to say 2 lanes each way for 481.

Got ya.

Another quick q:

Hotels (reputable chains) along 81 between Cornell and Syracuse? I am considering leaving the night before, stopping to sleep and starting fresh with a short drive (<2 hours)in the AM.

Most of Syracuse's hotels are in the Carrier Circle area which is a few miles East of I-81 at Thruway Exit 35. Of the hotels in that area, I would recommend the Doubletree, Hilton Garden Inn, Embassy Suites, Candlewood Suites, Holiday Inn, and Hampton Inn.

Just north of Syracuse is the Quality Inn in Liverpool which is visible from I-81 and several yards from exit 25. I don't have any experience staying at this hotel, however it looks adequate to crash for the night.

If you would like to be closer to Oswego, there is a relatively new Hampton Inn on Route 31 in Clay which has its own exit off I-481. The hotel is less than .25 miles from the I-481 exit and is adjacent to a Barnes & Noble, restaurants, and other shopping. Across the street from the Hampton Inn is the Fairfield Inn which operates under the Marriott flag. This hotel is older (probably built in the 1990s) however looks well maintained. Clay would put you approximately 25 to 30 minutes from Oswego.

Thank you for this info.

I am hoping to stay outside of Syracuse, south of the city somewhere along 81. Hampton Inn -- etc., is fine. I'm leaving at 7PM and hope to stop by midnight -- which is why I calculate being somehwere between Cornell and Syracuse. I don't mind waking up to a 90 min drive to Oswego.

Hrmm. South of the city unfortunately there isn't much between Cortland and Syracuse. There's a Best Western in Tully (15-20 minutes south of Syracuse) and then there's pretty much nothing hotel-wise between there and Cortland (45ish minutes south of Syracuse). I believe there are a fair number of hotels immediately off the highway in Cortland that might suit your needs, don't know much about them in particular though.

Cortland would peg you probably just outside of 90 minutes to Oswego, probably closer to an hour and 45 minutes.
