we went with the ipad wifi only model. we considered 3G but the bottom line was, "not another monthly bill." some of the utility like a live map while driving would be nice - but not worth $20+ per month.

I had the WiFi only model last time, but decided to try the 3G (GSM) this time.

It is not exactly a monthly bill as you are able to purchase a month at a time right on the unit: start or cancel at any time, no extra fees, no contract.
Just handy for when I really need it for a few days on the road or vacation ($15-25 a month depending on data needs).

FWIW the GPS in the 3G model works fine and without activating the service plan.

Oh, that's cool. I thought you HAD to sign a contract.

The ability to just sign up for one month is nice, but I would still get the wifi only model. I have a Droid with turn-by-turn navigation, my wife has an iPhone and we have a Garmin GPS is we wanted to use that for some reason.

I read that some of the chips in the iPad2 are made in Japan and thus in short supply. If true the wait to get one may get longer.

The iPad marekt on Craigslist is vastly entertaining. First generation used iPads offered for more than the retail price of similar new iPad2's.
iPad 2's at $200-$300 over retail.
A little Valium might be in order.

To clarify, you can use the GPS function without a data plan or a month-to-month bill?

This is one of the issues I'm holding out for on a tablet. I want GPS, but I don't want to pay $30 a month to do so when I have a cellphone bill and a DSL bill already.

Correct.

The GPS works (I have the NAVIGON app installed on mine) when the cellular radio is turned OFF.
