I don't need a cell phone for anything other than emergencies. I have a land line and a cheap top up cell phone.
I would like however to have internet access not tied to wi-fi.
If the Kindle Fire 3G were everything a smart phone was without the phone I'd buy it in a minute (well if monthly rates were cheaper anyway). But that's not my impression. It seems sort of limited to access to Amazon products and I'm not sure how much or how good the access to the internet is.
It does seem though that phone useage aside that smartphones and fire are starting to meet in the middle toward mobile non-wi-fi internet useage which thrills me.
I hope a true mobile internet ability happens soon. I suppose most people don't care that its tied to a cell phone but I hope with the phone option that the monthly cost is much reduced. It would help out in rural areas and while traveling so much.

Hm. Apparently 3G isn't even on the Fire but on the touch? And no not full mobile celluar data. Further apart than I thought
Found this on a discussion
Edward, the 3G internet capability on the Touch is limited to the Amazon Store and Wiki. To access other sites you must have access to WiFi, either at home from your own wireless network, or by going to Starbucks or other location that offers free WiFi. (whispernet is just Amazon's pet word for their connection)

Edward says:
I purchased the K-Fire for my Mom who doesn't have anything but dial-up Internet. I was hoping the Whisper-net would still be there as it is on my DX, but I was mistaken apparently. I decided to test out the K-Fire before giving it to my Mom but Internet presence has to be there. I have since discovered that if I get Mom the new Kindle Touch the Whisper-Net is not the same as my DX and requires an Internet presence to go with the Whisper-Net. This last statement is partially true and partially speculation since there are no clear specs available for the new Kindle Touch. Anyone have the answer? I can't afford to keep buying different models to find one that can be used similar to my DX. The comment made about Whisper Net going away in two years is news to me. Updates are appreciated.
The regular kindle with 3g and wifi is great because you can pick up a signal almost anywhere
But its black and white and the bandwidth is nothing to borrow on the atat 3g
The kindle fire is wifi only
Files downloaded are bigger movies color books but does not have a contract with atat 3g so you have to hunt for a wifi signal.
Too damn confusing for me

Kindle Fire = Wi-Fi only, no 3G
You're looking for something like the Samsung Galaxy Tab, HTC Flyer, or iPad.
