Is it just me or is the Kindle DX overpriced at $379? For $20 bucks more, you could pick up an iPad2!

The reason I'm bringing this up is, that there is a specific use for a Kindle DX that I have in mind for it, that may not be as well-addressed by the iPad 2. Let me say, that I now have the Kindle Touch and for general reading purposes, it is just fine. However, in the past few years, I've taken up piano and I've started to notice that music books are starting to show up in their Kindle versions. Trying to see the notes on a typical page of music using the Kindle Touch would require the visual acuity of Superman. I suspect that on a Kindle DX, music would be a lot easier to see. If I could sway Amazon, a Super-sized DX with a 12" diagonal span would make an ideal platform for reading music on your typical piano desk. The nice thing the DX has over the iPad, is the much longer battery life (and user-replaceable battery for the technically-adventurous) as well as no need for a color screen for pages of music. A few people on the pianoworld forums have tried using their iPads for this purpose but most report the screen is just not quite big to handle this use to a successful degree.

I'd be willing to give the DX a shot if it was priced at $199 or even better, $149. It can't cost Amazon to make a DX nearly what it costs Apple to produce the cheapest iPad 2 and it's getting a little long in the tooth at this point, anyway. I be willing to bet that if they dropped the price on the DX, there'd be a much bigger market for them. Any thoughts on this issue?

Well the bottom line is supply and demand. If no one was paying $379 for it, they would lower the price.
So some people must be buying them.
Why is it almost iPad price?
It's HALF the thickness of an iPad. It has 5x the battery life. Lasts 7 days of constant use! 2-3 weeks if you turn wifi off!
It has FREE 3G connectivity to get books anywhere practically on the planet.

I don't get people whining about price. It is what it is. Suck it up and pay for it, or wait and see if it gets cheaper. I want a convertible hard top V70 (C70?) Volvo. It's BS that the base model is $40K. I can buy a Chrysler for $25!!!
Not fair....
No offense intended. I know it sucks.
I want a 10" Adnroid tablet. I refuse to pay $500 for one.
So I continue to wait. And prices are coming down....

Shop around, too. Here's one for $319 from Quill.

Come on.

I think that you have a point. I'll wait until it's $149 on Circuit City.com and they're having a final blowout sale. I'm patient!

Your premise is absolutely false - there is NO demand for the Kindle DX. All of those features you mentioned - thin design, light weight, battery life - can be found in the cheapest Kindle for $80. My guess is that Amazon keeps selling them since for the uninformed that equates a higher price with a better product, when in reality the cheaper Kindles are much better values than the DX. Just my thoughts.

So Amazon must be making out well on the Kindle DX, which further supports that it is not overpriced.

Supply and Demand isn't some theory. It works. If there was no demand for it, it wouldn't be around.
The fact that the price has remained constant all this time means there is at least SOME demand for it. Sure, a smaller Kindle does the same thing, but isn't it nice to have an option for a 9.7 inch screen?

Or take like my iPad where I can cruise the internet, play games, write letters, work on presentations, put together a spreadsheet, or and maybe read a book, watch a movie, or listen to music...

Can a Kindle DX do that, and do it well?

It doesn't, it's not supposed to, and it doesn't claim to.

A laptop can do all that and does it better while costing less than an iPad. Might as well get a workstation if we're comparing feature sets and ignoring user experience.

How does one justify the price then?
