I have a 2 part decision: whether I should buy a tablet and if so, should I get the nexus 7/10 or iPad.

I currently have a Nexus 4 and a laptop which I mostly use Chrome with. I'm really happy with my Nexus 4 and like the pure Android/Google experience so am naturally drawn to the Nexus 7. Would there be a benefit from having "unified" Android or would this be even more redundant (owning any tablet and smartphone will lead to redundancies)? I'm firmly not in the Apple fanclub but have to admit the iPad offers an amazing experience. The iPad would expose me to a brand new app store but wouldn't provide the seamless experience that having 2 Nexus devices would.

Any thoughts on this? Since I've never had a tablet, my imagination is failing me.

IMO, one pro to owning both a phone and tablet on the same platform is sharing the apps. As long as you use the same account on both devices, you can install all of your apps on both devices.

Other than that, it's kind of a toss up. If you really want to have one device in each ecosystem, then grab an iPad, If you prefer the customization capabilities of Android, then you might not be happy with Apple. ....

The iPad has great battery life, the screen and built-in keyboard is much bigger and clearer to see without annoying glare, the OS is simple to use, better app selection, amazing functionality and efficiency. If anything, the iPad is the best for a first time tablet buyer.

i think the note 3 is easy to use as well for the first time buyer. it all depends on how much there willing to spend and what os they prefer. me i won't buy nothing less than 16 gb of memory and it's gotta have an sd card slot as well

Someone has been drinking the kool-aid.
The Nexus has great battery life. The screen has no more annoying glare then your iPad does. The OS is JUST as simple to use. And if you don't like the keyboard it ships with you can install another one, unlike the iPad.
Marginally better app selection, let's face facts. The days of Apple having a huge advantage there are over.
The Nexus has amazing functionality (?!?!?!) and efficiency (?!?!?!?).
I get that you like your iPad and it is a great device... but the Nexus is every bit as good. In my opinion better.

Is it still true that the Play store has much less tablet optimized apps than the App store? I've seen statements like this made in the past couple years, but I'm curious if that still holds true...

If so, it's a big reason to get the iPad if I do end up buying a tablet.

They are still behind in that area, but the gap has closed a bit.
This is about the last thing I would base my purchase decision on, though. It's not like non-Tablet-Optimized apps look bad on either device.

Hmm...so you find that apps that aren't optimized fill the screen well? I'm a tablet noob, so your statement about this being unimportant is surprising to me.
