I loved my Kindle Fire HDX, since I buy books and music through Amazon. Just don't put it in your back pocket and forget about it. Now I have to buy another one.
I love my HP Omni 10. This is not a toy Android tablet (Android? - that's what smart phones are for), not a worthless Windows RT, but a full Windows 8.1 tablet. A couple months ago Amazon incredibly had it priced for considerable under $300 but they came to there senses and raised the price back up to $350 or so. Even at that price it has a lot of bang for the buck.
It fills the gap between the more expensive Surface Pro's, and for most people this is all you need. Blazing fast quad core atom processor. I'm amazed at the performance I've been able to tweak out of this thing - 3d gaming, with limitations, no problem. Video - beautiful. Windows 8.1 is of course a pain, I usually ignore the 8.1 screen and the "aps" - you don't need silly aps, you just load real windows programs. I even have a virtual XP drive loaded on the SD card. This is all intents and purposes, equivalent to a laptop tech-wise from only a few years ago. All for under $300 (at the time).
It's somewhat limited in memory, but you can make it up in a micro SD memory drive - I have a 32 gig one in mine. Games and some programs are loaded to the SD drive - no problem. Of course, some people just want the idiot-proof simplicity of Android or Apple - this tablet is not for them. If you want an even more portable full functioning laptop (with a virtual keyboard of course) - this is for them.
I have the Asus Windows tablet and find Windows 8.1 actually ENJOYABLE with a touch interface. Surprised you don't.
Is that directed at me? - Nope, don't particularly like the touch interface. If I use the 8.1 metro screen it's fine, but if I wanted to do that I mine as well just get an Android tablet. I find myself most of the time using the standard old fashioned windows screen and my fat fingers are just to big for all the small icons and arrows.
I use a Bluetooth mouse most of the time.
Yea. Of course it's hardly usable in Desktop mode, but the "Modern UI" is actually kind of fun with touch.
The News app is easily the best I've ever seen on a tablet.
The Food app is great, which I nearly deleted until I saw how useful it would be for my wife who likes saving recipes.
No tablet on the market has a better task switcher, imo. Just swipe, swipe, swipe.
That's exactly WHY I like it. It's a tablet. It's a computer. It's both. And it does both well.
I barely touch my Android tablet any more...
