My wife has wanted one for quite awhile. I want to surprise her with one, but need help. The I-Pad is a tablet? Does only Apple make them? How do they connect to the internet? We have internet through our cable provider now. Would we need something additionally? What? We both have laptops so I don't really understand this. My wife wants to look at Facebook, play games like Candy Crush, check emails. I think she would use it like a laptop, but wants something easier to move around, take on trips, to the office, ect. She would like a bigger screen, so no mini. I see Apple has a very popular one for 399.00.

Yes

The tablet called the iPad, yes.
How do they connect to the internet?
Just like your laptops do assuming you don't connect them with a wire to surf the net.

No.

They work over wireless networks.

If you need connectivity when wireless networks are unavailable you would buy a mobile data plan kind of like a smart phone, except without the calling network, for $X/month with a telecom carrier.

Since you say you "know nothing" perhaps you don't know you also have the option of the Android tablet OS if you are not specifically set on an IPAD. You are paying a premium for the Apple brand, although they are excellent devices. Check out some of the better reviewed Android tablets and you will find you will get much more bang for your buck.

Thank you all. We know we are late to the party as these have been out awhile. Will look at Apple, and check Android too. Now I can say I no longer "no nothing" about the IPAD!

The wife wants an iPad. Don't get a cheap imitation. Get the one you saw for 399. Make her happy.

I agree with dkf747. This coming from an "Android guy".
She will be very happy with that $400 iPad.

Yes, it probably will be an IPAD. She has been dropping hints for a long time. She will be SHOCKED when it shows up for no reason at all! 400 is quite doable. I honestly have no idea how I was able to get her in the first place.....

No.
Disagree.
They don't just need internet.
They need wifi.
So that may require a different or additional router/modem.
