Info re buying/rooting Nook HD+ (play, app, vs)

For the price, screen size and display image, I think a Nook HD+ offers a lot. It also allows expandable memory with the available slot feature. I bought several about 18 mo ago for friends...but I have an IPad II.
It is now starting to act a little wonky.
I don't do anything difficult--email, reading on Kindle app, streaming movies from various sites, play music via Sonos app and Pandora vs buying/storing...and don't use the camera feature enough to miss it.
Not in love w/Apple products but have IPhone.

I am wondering if it is worth buying a refurbished 32gb NookHD+ (NIB non-existant pretty much) and having someone reroot it for a better operating system. That seemed to be what most complaints about the product were based on.
I have no idea how to do it myself--but have read reviews from owners who did it to their NookHD+ after warranty ran out. They were very positive about how speed was improved and other issues.
How would I find someone to do that switch and what would be best OS to work on that tablet?

I can get a refurbished unit for $99+ depending on the source.
One of those I have to 5 yr old who has moved up to IPad--I might be able to get his for less than that.

You probably won't, outside your circle of family and friends. It isn't hard, BUT:
I would never rely on ROOTING & ROM'ing to get that perfect device.
There are a lot of ROM's out there and the first one you try you might not like at all. So you try another and another until you find the perfect one.

If you aren't willing to get in there and get your own hands dirty doing this, you positively should not.

Agree completely with this.

I think ROMs are a great way to extend the life of an otherwise extinct device, but wouldn't want it on my primary tablet / phone unless I was really sure that everything worked perfect, and had a lot of patience for reloading / changing ROMs.

I have an HP Touchpad with CM on it, and it's great for using on the kitchen counter for recipes and with a few kitchen specific apps, but every version of every ROM I've had on it over the last few years has been missing something, or had some issues. I've also had to eventually reflash them to continue using apps, as they tend to have unofficial versions of many Google apps and they don't update correctly to keep using newer features.
