I use a laptop now, for internet and a few Office functions. I am thinking that a tablet will serve my purposes just fine. Perhaps a lack of a keyboard would be a pain?
Will one of those $300-$400, or less, tablets be enough? I assume I can run a remote printer off it?
I had a Nexus 7 tablet. It was nice, but it was not so easy to do "computer" type stuff on it, even with a keyboard. It was more like a big phone.
I got an Acer C720P touchscreen Chromebook ($270, amazon) and I like it so much that I got rid of my Nexus 7 tablet. The Chromebook is smaller and lighter than my Windows 7 laptop, easier to carry around, and has much better battery life (8-10 hours) than either the tablet or the laptop. It's big enough to do some real work on, even with just the Chrome OS. I use Google Docs, Google Sheets, etc. They convert to Office functions. I think you can get a Chrome app for the Office suite. I haven't printed from my Chromebook but I think it needs to use cloudprint or something like that. I can't just plug in my old Canon printer and use it.
What type of Office functions? Are you talking about MS Office itself?
Yes, I use Word quite a bit, and Excel once in awhile, but I could get along with just a basic kind of word processing. I can always go to my other desktop to do a lot of writing.

I have all of the platforms, so I've basically tried them all. I picked this one up a few weeks ago and found it to be very versatile and built pretty well. The keyboard attached magnetically has a pretty solid feel to it. I've switched to it for general MS software and just upgraded it to Win10. If you need a mouse it has a micro usb on the tablet section and a std usb on the keyboard section.
