My uncle recently passed away and left his Ipad to my Mom. The problem is that it is locked and he didn't give her the pass code. How would she go about unlocking the ipad? She tried calling Apple, no help. Is she out of luck or is there a solution? Thanks in advance for the help.

It's a paper weight without his iCloud information.

Good lesson to be learned here.
Store your login information somewhere for other on your important accounts people.

It can be done.

Everything on it will be erased but see here:
How to do that.

Another suggestion, just take it to an Apple store. I'm pretty sure they will do it, although possibly only restore to factory configuration thus losing all content and apps (which is probably not a problem).

The Apple people are so nice! My iPhone is 5 years old (out of warranty) yet they have been nice enough to help me with my problems.

take it to an apple store or some place, they might charge $5-10 but might be able to save photos and such before reset

Remember the federal case where Apple refused to open a locked iPhone or iPad, even after a court order. The government eventually hired an Apple ex-employee (engineer or something) to crack it.

Ah, I found a related article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FBI%E2...yption_dispute

That is why I doubt they'll do anything but restore it to factory default (no data, no apps). I didn't look at the link above but I suspect anybody can reset/erase their iPhone/iPad by following the step-by-step.

The people at the Apple store were very nice to me last time my iPhone got in a state I couldn't fix. It sort'a erased my phone but it repopulated from my iCloud. They did it for free despite my iPhone being years out of warranty.

If you can follow the step-by-step, do it. Otherwise take it to the store and ask for help. They'll tell you before hand if there is any charge.

Oh, OP, I see you said "she tried calling, no help." Like I said, take it to an Apple store.

The physical iPad and your uncles data/purchases are two different things.

The iPad can be reset to be like it came empty from the factory. Going to an Apple store would be the easiest way to get this done.

It looks like if you want access to his iCloud data and purchases, it will take a legal battle to get access.

Unless you can prove ownership, I doubt you can get them to unlock it. I have heard this discussed on a tech radio show before.

To prevent theft, Apple will likely not help you unless you can prove ownership.

Otherwise, you could bring in a stolen ipad and give them the same story...
