I'm looking for something to read online newspaper sites and articles. I would like something that is lightweight and doesn't overheat. Also since I already have a PC and just purchased a new smartphone I don't want something that's exorbitant. Any suggestions?

Which smartphone did you purchase?
I suggest that if you purchases an Android smartphone, go with an Android tablet.
If you purchased an iPhone, go with an iPad.
That way you don't have to straddle two different ecosystems.

I have a S20 FE. Ok so I will go with a Sumsung tablet. Should the Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite do the trick?

That looks like a nice tablet. We have a Samsung Tab A 10.1 with 128GB, purchased at Costco for $240. My wife uses it to read newspapers, read and write email and occasionally surf the web. It is great and pretty simple to use. We got the 10 inch screen because it is easier to read newspapers.

Does it ever overheat? Any cons?

I went with the S6 Lite about six months ago and it DOES NOT overheat. And I use it quite a bit for playing movies that I download from Netflix and Amazon for when I camp. Also use it at night to surf the web and never gets even warm.
Been a great tablet so far.

Ok, I purchased the S6 Lite. Its noticeably lags. I think I'm going to exchange it for the S6 or an S7+. I will definitely get a screen protector as well. Is a tablet case necessary? I plan to only use it at home. I really like the idea of a tablet. I don't know why I waited so long to get one.

Lags? It is not as fast as my laptop in opening programs, but my primary use was for watching movies while camping and there is NO lag the movies and not real lag on opening Amazon prime or Netflix.
As for a screen protector...yes I purchased one (thin glass type) primarily cause I pack it into my duffle and throw the duffle into the back of the PU or into the trailer. Then I just leave it laying around the trailer when camping. Also purchased a case with some notches to that it will support the opened table in different positions for watching.

I haven't heard of any tablets overheating. But in your case a simple table as the ones mentioned above should be fine for you. Just choose one that has the screen size you like.
I don't like any of the tablets (prefer laptops), but the best ones I have ever used are the iPad Pro I used at work.

I just got a Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 for Christmas and I am happy with it. Unlike a smartphone or laptop, a tablet is not an everyday personal device for me, so I don't feel the need to have a high-end tablet. I mainly use it for watching movies.
