We are Native Floridians from Gainesville/surrounding areas and have been living in Lexington, KY for the last four years. We really miss FLA and are planning a move back, but do not want to go back to Gainesville so we have been looking into the Tallahassee area. Crawfordville and the general Wakulla Co area are drawing our attention. My husband is a software developer/engineer and I have worked at UF & UK in clerical/asst positions, our daughter is in Kindergarten. We want a rurally located home with 1+ acres, if at all possible around the $150-$160K range. We are not "big city" people and like the idea of driving into Tallahassee for our jobs and necessary trips so we are not looking for nightlife, etc..we do want beaches, country roads and animal friendly atmosphere. We are NOT scared of gators and the like...we enjoy all that Florida has to offer which is why we want to move back. If anyone could give me a general idea and atmosphere of Crawfordville and the Wakulla area I would appreciate it. We do want to relocate to the Coastal side of the area to be closer to the Gulf and travel back and forth to Gville to visit family, but within 30 mins of Tally for work. Please, no podunk references...it's insulting.

Well, if you want rural, you'll find it in Wakulla. There's hardly anything down there, though they do have a Walmart and Winn-Dixie. Even the county seat is unincorporated.

Gainesville is NOT trash, it is a fantastic place to live and raise a family. We do not want to go back because the housing is inflated and the cost of living versus the salary pool are not equal. Snowbirds have seen to inflating homes prices, etc...I don't want any place dissed. I only asked about Wakulla and Crawfordville because we have never been there and I don't want to blindly walk into a bad location, ie: crime, drugs, hostilities, etc..
We do not deem "having nothing" as bad, we will be driving into Tally everyday for work, so we will be getting our fill of "city & work life". We love outdoor life, gardening, bike riding, want to have animals (I grew up on a farm, on the side of 301 with 1 country store and 1 jiffy store 1 mile from my house, no neighbors and we were surrounded by ares of pines, pastures and swamps). I loved it and I want the same for my daughter. Entertainment can be found anywhere if you look, and we won't hesitate to drive into Tally for events and the like.
I would like to hear from people that live or have lived in these areas recently, not those that can't understand why people are there in the 1st place.
Thanx.

Well, judging by your description, I think you'll like Wakulla. I'm not sure about land/home prices, but I'd imagine they can only go up as more of Wakulla becomes a bedroom community for Tallahassee.

Most of Wakulla County is still very rural with land ownership consisting of mult-acre farms and ranches. There are pockets of new housing available, including 1-5 acre tracts - but it should be another twenty+ years before Wakulla becomes a suburb of Tallahassee (most of Tallahassee's recent growth is to its the north and east).

Didn't pennysmom open her post with "We are Native Floridians from Gainesville/surrounding areas" and end the post with "Please, no podunk references...it's insulting."

You wouldn't take kindly to anyone calling Tallahassee/Leon County trash would you?

pennysmom - It sounds like Wakulla is what you are looking for. It's lush, rural and home to the world's largest spring. Wakulla County Chamber of Commerce - Wakulla County, FL Chamber of Commerce - Wakulla County, Florida - Request information on Real Estate in Wakulla County - Request information on Fishing in Wakulla County Florida

Maybe its just me, but Tallahassee is faaaaaaaaar from a big city, so you'll do fine just moving to "the city". But if quiet country life is what you guys want, then you can't really beat Wakulla.

The biggest news the past few months there was a new Burger King opening up
