If you looking for a nice quiet area. I would stick to North Tallahassee, which would be all areas North of I-10. The areas close to the universities tend to me younger more college crowd type.

If you restrict your search only to areas north of I-10, you'll miss out on some really nice neighborhoods. What exactly is it you are trying to avoid?

Look north of I-10 - check out the new stuff just off Thomasville Road near Chiles High School.

Some areas to avoid are Frenchtown, anything bordering Famu, Orange Blvd, anything bordering FSU, downtown area. Nice areas include midtown area, lake jackson area, NE I-10 area, East Apalachee area, and Southwood area.

Let me edit in light of the other posters comments - there ARE some great neighborhoods south of I-10.

Midtown is a pretty cool place to live these days. Southwood is very new, nice and has LOTS of amenities.

It really depends on your needs.
