TPD did not attack the peaceful Occupy protesters like Austin did.

A little known fact...Tallahassee was one of the birth places of the early Internet, thanks to Hilbert Levitz and others.

It didn't translate into a booming local tech biz though.

1) TLH has generally not been a "pro-business" town, for better or for worse. Despite what others have claimed about massive overdevelopment (which isn't the case - at least not "massive"), the "comprehensive plan" from about 20 yrs ago restricted many types of development.
That comment really confused me. This town is practically hostile to development, if the screeching developers are any indication.

Default The gambling issue.....

Does anyone think that the expansion of gambling in South Florida and throughout Florida will help or hurt Tallahassee's growth or outlook for the future?

Gambling never helps anyone but the casino owners.

And the people employed in the process.

Creating jobs out of the inexhaustible supply of stupid. Not the worst idea.

Gambling would likely bring more money into the state coffers, which would only mean good things for TLH. Not unless any additional tax/fee collections are offset by the potentially negative social or financial costs, which would create an offsetting drain. My guess is that it would create an overall positive financial boost for the state budget, but I'm going on nothing more than my opinion.

I've personally never cared for gambling. Except for a very small group of people who can make money at it, the house always win in the long run and the player gets played. Your odds of winning the lottery are practically the same regardless of whether you buy a ticket or not, so I have chosen to not buy any lottery tickets over the years. Likewise, I don't care to sit in a casino and throw it away -- I would rather spend it on more productive pursuits, like wine, women, and song.

I do think Tallahassee is on the up-side, but it is a very slow paced up-side. As far as comparing it to Austin, I think it would take a very long time to get to that point. Like JAS stated, this town relies on government and its universities. Both have faced drastic cuts recently, which may be a good thing in disguise.

It will start forcing this community into other private compainies, which we are starting to see. It also good that large store and restaurants are coming here as well. This shows that these places are doing their homework, and projecting the area to be good in the future.

I think Tallahassee's biggest problem is location. Nothing for 2 hours east, west, and north. No major highway other than I-10. No bodies of water in the city limit worth mentioning. (Austin has tons of lakes!)

Little to no tourism as well. No amusement park, zoo, aquarium, minor league sports teams etc.

Very low wage and ultra high stress jobs. Better off flipping burgers.
