We will be visiting Tallahassee soon with our daughter.
While in the area, we'd like to do some tent camping in December.

Which campsites would you recommend that would be near/not too far from Tallahassee?
We are not primitive campers and are looking for a family-oriented campground, with clean showers and hot water, safe, potentially in a forest-like setting with big trees, with decent sized lots for comfortable tent camping, as we have a big tent.

Let me know and thanks for your advice, since we have not been to the Tallahassee area before.

Pretty much every state park in Florida has a camping area like you describd.

Welcome to Florida State Parks

Ones to which I have been (it has been some years since I went camping) and would recommend are St. George Island (nice in the winter, overrun with ravenous mosquitos otherwise), Torreya (RV pads...but the primitive site overlooking the Apalachicola River is worth pooping in the woods for a night). I recall Blackwater being very nice, as well as the Florida Caverns in Marianna.

There's lots of good stuff to the east of Tallahassee all the way to Gainesville too. Oleno is quite nice.

Be sure to check the weather - it can get cold in December in the TLH area, especially if you're coming from south FL and aren't accustomed to it. Not a big deal if you're sleeping in a hotel, but perhaps a shock to the system if you're sleeping under the stars.
