Am thinking of retiring there. Homes seems very reasonably priced, etc. How is crime, quality of life, etc? Any info or tips would be appreciated.

Whatever you don't drink any well water there. Rumor is it is very badly contaminated from leaking gasoline tanks.

Madison is a very small quiet town. It is very beautiful. The country roads have huge oaks with Spanish Moss. It also has a hospital which is important for retirement. Madison only has one major grocery store - Winn-Dixie but no Wal-Mart, Lowe's, Home Depot or major restuarants. Most people go to Valdosta, GA which is about 25 miles north, for major shopping or dining out. If you are looking for a small quiet town it may be a good choice. The people that live in Madison are mostly happy to be there and stay involved in the town. I live in an even smaller town just to the west of Madison, but have some friends that live there and have spent time there. I haven't heard anything about the issue with the water as mentioned by Smalleyster. I suggest contacting the Chamber of Commerce or visiting their web site for more information.

Good summary by SierraGirl. Madison is a pretty little town, there are some beautiful old houses on the north side of the downtown, the surrounding county is very rural with pastures and lots of wet areas.
