So I am a 19 year old girl and I am moving from the bay area (near oakland) California to Tallahassee to go to school at TCC. I have never been to Florida andI just wanted to get an idea of what im getting my self into what to expect etc. Also some people (who try to convince me not to go) tell me that it can be very racists over there. is that true? I am Hawaiian-Puerto Rican and Black. I plan on living in the apartments very close to the college and i thought about taking the bus or getting a bike rather than a car. are the apartments near there pretty safe? do different complexes have reputations? how are the buses? should i invest in getting a car?

if someone could help me out that would be great! thanks in advance!

Tallahassee is a great city for college students, and TCC is a nice college you will like it. I would say if you have the money to, get a car, because Tallahassee is really spread out and driving helps a lot!.

The bus system is ok.. Its not great.. you can probably get to where you need to, but its not the most on time system, and doesnt go everywhere you might want to.

A bike could be helpful for getting to class, and you can also toss it onto one of the busses, if you plan to ride them.

As far as racism? No i don't think its racist here, as much as any other place.. FAMU is located here which is a historically african american school.

I think you will have a good time here. Tallahassee is a great city, and has a lot to offer College students. When your done at TCC, if you so choose, you can transfer to FAMU or FSU and stay in the same city if you choose.

The beaches are a short drive away, and the weather is very nice in the fall/winter/spring.

Summer is obviously really hot, because its Florida.

Apartments are hit or miss... I would suggest you browse through some of them on Apartments.com and read student reviews to get an idea of good or bad complexes.

When will you be moving?

I am from Tallahassee and went to Florida State for undergrad, and am now starting in the Fall going back to grad school at FSU..

The sports teams are fun to watch, and the city offers lots of places to go out.

You have Midtown for eating/bars

Tennessee st strip for college bars

and lots of natural things to do outside of town. Wakulla Springs St park, St George Island. Its pretty much a great place to live.

Sounds good should give you 2 or 3 weeks to get your bearings in town. I would also suggest you check out the other parts of the city while you are living here.

You will be living on the west side of town, so definately look around the whole city.

I think you will love it.. Your also in pretty close proximity to other cities... (not super close)

But atlanta is 4.5 hours north, Jacksonville 2.5 hours, Gainesville 2 hours, Orlando (4 hours) Tampa(5 hours)
