Well, you could move up to the outlying areas surrounding Tallahassee. Once you leave the city, it gets rural fast. Surrounding counties of Leon, or the Rural parts of leon county would work.

You could try the Lake City area. It is very agricultural and there is a VA hospital and a couple of local hospital in town, with Gainesville and its semi big city amenities about 35-40 down I-75.

To me, the Tallahassee and Gainesville areas have a lot to offer for retirees. They are attractive , sophisticated places and have good shopping and medical services. There are many fine small towns in North Florida but during the silver years I would be concerned with lack of support services.

Agree - do you have a preference between the two areas? It seems, based on internet research anyway, that if one wants accessibility to good medical care and other services, they should live in, or within a reasonable distance of, a relatively large city in Florida.

Tallahassee is like a mid size city. Gainesville is like a big town.

Take your pick.

Tallahassee is very hilly and beautiful, Gainesville is pretty flat.

FSU in Tally, UF in Gainesville.

They are both great places to live.

I would choose Tallahassee any day over Gainesville in every respect but one: Gainesville has Shands. If top quality health care is very important to you, Gainesville wins.
