Hi,
My wife and I are entertaining the notion of a move to north Tallahassee so that we can be closer to my parents who live in the southern part of GA.
I have a "work anywhere" kind of job. As I understand it, a move to FL would mean that we no longer pay state income tax -- effectively giving me an 8% raise.
However, surely the other taxes are higher. Can anyone comment on other taxes such as property tax in Leon county?

Dan

I believe the sales tax in Leon County (Tallahassee) is 7.5%. Be aware that there is a corporate income tax in FL of 5.5% if you are a "C" corporation, but it doesn't apply to "S" corporation income or any other income that passes through to you personally.

You can check out the Leon County tax appraiser's website (Bert Hartsfield) for property tax information - there is a FAQ section that describes the rates, exemptions, etc. and a tax estimator tool. Also keep in mind that there is a city property tax component that would not be charged if you are outside the city limits.

Thanks...I found some info on millage rates and learned that the assessed value is reset when the property sells to the new market value.
Honestly, it doesn't seem that bad. If a couple saves $10k in state income taxes, an extra 2k in property taxes seems like a no-brainer trade-off.

I agree - real estate taxes are generally higher in FL than in other states (especially once the value is reset), but the income tax savings make up for it.

DanDan,

It's a safe move We moved to Tallahassee down from Maine and the taxes here are awesome compared to other area's I have a $255,000 house I pay $3200 in property taxes, no state tax no excise taxes on cars or anything, people complain the utilities are expensive but still half of what I paid in Maine, I want to say 17 cents a kWh, My total utility bill is average $300 water/gas/sewer/garbage and electric (air set at 76 8m/y) (2000sqft home with a pool pump running 10h/d) 7.5 sales, but food/drugs are not taxed and you can save by shopping in Ga or ordering over the internet. They nail you one like $150 to first transfer you car title over to Florida then its like $35 a year after that way better then the excise of 3% blue book value each year. I don't know where you are relocating from but its a safe move. Food/gas all cost of living stuff is priced well and it feels like we have had a 15000/y pay raise since we moved here. I say if you can come on down. Hope this helps you out.
