Being a mixed race couple, I really don't think you would have any problems in a place like Albany. I would think the only places where you might experience problems would be in places that are dominated by one race. If you were to move to a small town in the mountains of North Georgia where there just aren't many black people, then you might have a hard time developing close relationships with people, though I still doubt you would experience overt racism.

The best places to be a mixed race couple in the Old South tend to be near military bases because the military will smacketh hard upon any businesses they consider to be discriminating, and the folks in uniform are required to be polite about such relationships as a condition for continuing to serve. While Albany does suck in many ways, I'd probably just go ahead and buy into one of the nicer white collar/military officer communities just on the Lee County side of things and spend much weekend quality time in Tallahassee or Atlanta.

I defiantly don't blame you for preferring to live in Tallahassee over Albany, But first you should try out Albany first, Then make your decision. I would agree with the previous posters that is too long of commute to be going through boring South Georgia. The sad part is, If you do decide to move to Albany you'll find yourself traveling to Tallahassee for many things...

I don't see why. They might go to Tallahassee every once in a while to have a good time, but they would have no real NEED to go there.

We too are possibly looking at moving to Albany from southern IN. We have a 10 yr old, 7 yr old, and 9 mo old. Obviously schools & neighborhoods are extremely important to us!! Are there any nice areas near Albany that we should look into?? Thank you!!

Schools in Lee County just north of Albany are thought to be significantly better if you're looking to go the public route. The down side is that Lee has generally concentrated schools closer to Leesburg, so you can get some long bus rides if you don't drop the kids off yourself.
