Hello!
We've been looking at homes in Sarasota for a while and had every intention of moving there until our daughter moved to Atlanta. So, we're trying to find a community further north in Florida that has some of the same qualities as Sarasota: beaches, culture, restaurants, festivals, farmers markets, shopping, did I mention beaches? Whole Foods, etc. Any recommendations?
Anyone care to compare and contrast?
We've never really been to the panhandle area but hear that it's has great beaches. Is it tropical like it is in Sarasota?

Thanks so much in advance.

You will love it here. Tallahassee has an extremely high quality of life and is very naturally beautiful. It has amazing recreational opportunities with a great park system, and the beach is 30/45 minutes away.

They are in the process of opening Whole Foods and Trader Joes in Tallahassee. (both will be open in 3 months) We have publix, Earthfare, Fresh Market, New Leaf market, etc.

For grocery and food shopping, it can't be beat.

Tallahassee has great culture with Florida State University, and is growing at a fast pace.

Lots of revitalization going on in the Gaines Street District, and Cascades Park.

The forums are a great resource.

Tropical? not so much... it has a feel unlike any area in Florida.

It is Hilly and forested. Feels like South Georgia, its very very nice.

The closest nice beach is Saint George Island (1.5 hours) and if you want to see amazing beaches go to (Panama city and Destin (2.5-3.5 hours)

It has 4 seasons which is nice, it gets cold in the winter..

The location is ideal for travel to Atlanta (4.5 hours by car) 4 if your haulin it.

The food scene is great, lots of great local restaurants and we have some districts popping up in Midtown, Gaines,

and the Market District.

Sounds nice, but we're looking for something closer to the beach than Tallahassee. Would Panama City be covered by this forum? Definitely want a beach community.

Panama city is awful. Its nickname is the Redneck Riviera for a reason.

Not many jobs there. a very tourist economy..

The beach is beautiful, but its just not what most people like.

Lynne dont count out Tallahassee... I think you should come have a look.

Like TD, I am a big fan of Tallahassee.
Also, I agree that living in Panama City would not give you the "beach community" feeling you desire. It's major touristy and spring-breaky

Destin and Santa Rosa are nice. They won't compare culturally with Sarasota one to one, but have similar qualities. This time of year the weather won't be much different, but come Janurary it'll be 10-15 degrees colder.

My best friend and her husband live in Tallahassee. This post is a very VERY accurate account of the area, including the beautiful beaches in Panama City and, especially, Destin.

I love exploring and, as much as I am wholeheartedly a beach/coastal person, I found Tallahassee to be beautiful in its own way.
