Hello, I'll be starting my LL.M in FSU on Aug 2014. I want to rent an apt but I've read to avoid Nort and West Tallahasse. Suggestions please? I'm an international student so I won't be able to look at the apt in person.

I think if you communicate your needs to the office of the Associate Dean of Students at the College of Law, the staff there can help you.

Hi, thank you for your response. They send me a few options but way too expensive. I'm looking for something much more afforable. Do you know about what places to avoid?

Suggestions will depend on your price range, whether or not you'll have a car, and your willingness to have a roommate (or not).

Have you done any online searching, such as Googling "Tallahassee apartments near law school"? I did a quick search and got a lot of hits, but I don't know if any of them would be good for you, because I don't know your parameters.

I know a lot of law students live in the apartment buildings directly across Jefferson Street from the College of Law, but I don't remember the name of those apartments. It certainly is a convenient location.

Sure! The apt close to the College of Law are way too expensive, I'm looking around $500-$600, I don't mind having a roommate but my main concern its about a safe place. I've read online that on the west side of campus is called the student ghetto and that's dangerous.

I would like to avoid if there is an specific area or street that should be avoided of someone who lives close to campus.

Thanks for your tips.

Try the apartments near Stadium (Penscola) if you don't mind something off West Tenn/US-90. They were quite nice looking, safe and modern. Recent buildings, too. I forgot the names.... been a while since I lived in Tally (2012). You may want to try a roommate situation just for the first semester and then find better places once you are better situated. Check out sublets.

Another apartment near that may have cheap rent is Seminole Flatts. It's 'ok'---but there is the occasional drug addict/drunk that knocks on doors asking for money, but it's all manageable. I never felt unsafe walking around, just felt annoyed. Just call non emergency PD line and the officers will usually take care of it.

Check out craigslist. I think you would enjoy renting out a room in a house in midtown. Search the wen for midtown Tallahassee rentals. If you can get a family to rent you a room you should be all set. The neighborhood is great, and has food coffee and bars galore.

venturasteph,
I found a room that would be great for you! It's $950 a month, but that includes rent, cable, utilities and everything! It's a short walk from the Law School and here's what the ad says, "Hello all I'm an FSU senior undergraduate student looking for a roommate starting this summer. My townhouse unit is in The Cloisters of The All Saints district and is located directly above Catalina Cafe, The Fermentation Lounge, and The Grain. It is a short 5 min walk from The FSU Law School and Civic Center. Individual rent for the room is $950/month with utilities, cable, maintenance, etc. included. Private parking is given to all residents. Contact me through my email if you'd like to meet up and I will give you a tour of the apartment." The contact info is: mnrgc-4426160322@hous.craigslist.org which is an email address. Look it up on craigslist in Tallahassee under 415 St. Francis St. and you can see pictures, too.
Hope this helps,
Cynthia

If you are only considering places immediately around FSU campus then I could see the North side (frenchtown) being a place you'd want to avoid, but generally speaking South Tallahassee is going to be the worst area in town BY FAR.

There are several apartments immediately west of campus on Pensacola street, right around the Stadium/Pensacola intersection that should meet your criteria. I have no personal experience renting there and never even checked them out as I had no interest in living that close to campus, but I can't imagine they are more than $600 a month per person.
