We are ex-Floridians now living in Ohio who want to move to the pan handle area. Looking for a smaller town between Tallahassee and the coast. Somewhere that is not a long drive (less than an hour) to either the city or the beach. We want to be outside the storm surge/flood area but not afraid to hunker down during a hurricane as I grew up in Miami. Husband went to Fl State so he is familiar with the city but haven't been there for longer than I care to say! Love nature, biking, walking, canoes and kayaks as well as art, music, theater - not crazy about being right on top of neighbors. Interested in being near the Apalachicola National Forest. Would be great if there were some shops/restaurants/activities within walking distance. Am I looking for the impossible?

You should probably move to Tallahassee. You could try Southwood area as its on the south side of Tally and closer access to the forest and beaches.

what do ya'll think about Monticello? Looks like the schools aren't great but our girls are grown. Crime? Quality of life?

Monticello is cute. Nice historic homes about 30 minutes to Tallahassee.

We live in Monticello and love it.
We lived in Tallahassee in the past, but most recently resided in Illinois for the past six years.
We bought a house and 10 acres in Monticello and moved this past October.
Monticello has enough amenities on a day to day basis, and either Tallahassee or Thomasville are less than 30 miles away. The town is beautiful and the people are friendly.

What a beautiful home! I'm sure we've driven by it, but I don't personally know anything about it. Monticello is a beautiful, quaint charming little town. As in most all towns, there are some "rough" areas, but for the most part it feels very safe and welcoming. We actually live a few miles from town in a rural area, and even out here "in the boonies" on ten acres, several of our neighbors have dropped by to welcome us to the area.

Have you google street viewed the house? There's some sort of electrical or cell tower right across the street. You can go all over with street view for a feel of the area.
