ComSense, if you don't mind my asking, why? Is it the climate mostly---like because people want to experience all four seasons? Or something else? Just curious, I'm trying to be ready for the move if it happens by collecting as much anecdotal info possible to balance out the stats & graphs.
I did it for a wonderful career opp. I love my job and the company I work for. I'm also a native to FL so I knew what to expect, what I liked and what I didn't, didn't have to do a lot of homework, etc.

ComSense, oh you're from Asheville, no wonder you get blank stares. I don't know many people from Asheville that would leave it for Florida. In fact I don't know many people from Asheville that would leave it for anything. My friend is from there, and I know she often wishes she could move back. I'm not a mountain or a cold-weather person, so I don't make it over there much.

I'm in Raleigh, which is a great city as far as cities go. And I absolutely love NC, but the cold weather is hard on my health, and I wouldn't mind living somewhere smaller than Raleigh. Even though Raleigh is a small city, it's often too big for my taste. There are probably a lot of people in Raleigh who would think it's crazy to move to Florida, but those are the people who love what city life has to offer. I'd happily trade some city life amenities for a slower pace and quieter lifestyle. And as long as there's a beach within a 3 hour drive, my kids will be happy. One thing I will miss about Raleigh is all of the parks and greenways. I love being out in nature and there are lots of options within a very short distance from our home.

In other news, for those who are interested, after doing some more research on the utilities, if I'm reading things correctly it looks like TLH has much lower water rates than Raleigh. So maybe that will balance out the higher electricity costs.

before you leave a great place like Raleigh, just do a lot of research when moving to another place.

Thanks for the advice! I feel like I'm swimming in stats, but don't have enough info from actual people. The few people I know here in Raleigh who are from TLH say they loved it there and would consider moving back. I'm of the opinion a person can be as happy as they aim to be regardless of where they live, but probably my biggest concerns are--will my kids be happy and cost of living. But it all depends on my husband's job, and we won't find out till spring or summer.
