We are considering Tallahassee as a retirement destination in a couple of years. My husband lived there briefly in the early Eighties and has fond memories of the city, and we have visited a time or two, but only for a couple of days each time.

We will have at least one car as he is a great frequenter of acoustic open mics, but one of my retirement goals is to drive as little as possible (and I know that Florida is auto-based, having grown up in Fort Myers). I have a peculiar set of interests which I won't detail here, but the area around the Ashford Club apartments seems central to most of the things I would be likely to do on a daily/weekly basis. Is that a walkable area? ("Walkable" for me requires sidewalks.) Are there decent transit options if I want to wander farther afield without battling traffic myself?

That area is charming with whole foods, and the little theater nearby. In my opinion little of Tallahasse is very walkable and public transportation is in its infancy. There are plenty sidewalks in most areas of the city. Southwood is better is you want to walk in nature, and there is a town center that you could get close to perhaps. Remember that Thomasville Road by the Ashford Apartments is busy. If you are going to live in the Ashford apartments, a very lovely lady manages it and several other retirees and students, etc. live there. Best to you.

I hope this can just add discussion.

But, I'm curious how Tallahassee would compare with Gainesville for walkability? Anyone have experience with both areas?

Great question, Tiger Beer. I have a college friend who now lives in Gainesville, but because he's somewhat mobility-impaired, he doesn't walk long distances. I have been told that the Gainesville bus system is pretty good.

It doesn't. I have lived in both. Gainesville was MUCH more pedestrian friendly. I walked everywhere while living there. Tallahassee is very random in its walkability.

Thanks, Peachy61. I've been away from the forum for a while. I honestly feel culturally more attuned to the area where I have lived for 30+ years than to Florida, where I grew up, but the winters have gotten old (as have I.)
