We are a large adoptive family with several children with special needs (from mild to severe). We are going to be relocating for work to Tallahassee this summer. I want to be within a 40 minute commute to Florida State University. Any recommendations for schools that do an awesome job with special needs children (Preschool, Elementary, Middle and High School)?

Thanks!

Not a school but a resource for folks with special needs and their families. The big event is in June in Orlando, free to attend, no registration cost for people with disabilities and their families. There is also assistance for accommodations if you talk to them early.

Since 1998, The Annual Family Café has brought Floridians with all types of disabilities together for three days of information, training and networking opportunities. With a great range of sessions on the most pressing topics, engaging Keynote Presentations, an enhanced Exhibit Hall and Employment Expo and a memorable Annual Summit on Disabilities featuring Governor Rick Scott, The 17th Annual Family Cafe promises to be our best yet!

Registration for The 17th Annual Family Café officially begins on Friday, February 13, 2015. You can register online at www.FamilyCafe.net beginning on that date. You may also register by mailing your completed registration form to 519 North Gadsden Street, Tallahassee, FL 32301 or by faxing it to 850/224-4674 at any time.

The Family Café does everything it can to connect its attendees with the resources we offer at the lowest cost possible. The Annual Family Café remains a free event, with no registration cost for people with disabilities and their families. Only those attending in a professional capacity are asked to pay a $150 registration fee.

The Family Café is also proud to offer families limited Financial Assistance, which can provide for complimentary accommodations at the Caribe Royale. To apply for assistance, simply note your request on the Application Form by marking the “Hotel” option. Assistance is based on available funding and awarded by lottery.

This year’s 17th Annual Family Café will be held at the Caribe Royale located at 2101 World Center Drive in Orlando. The Family Café has negotiated a special conference rate of $109 per night for rooms in The Family Café block at the Caribe Royale. To make a reservation, contact the Caribe Royale at 407/238-8000 and make sure to mention that you are attending The Annual Family Café.

If you receive Financial Assistance, your room reservation will be made by The Family Café. If you do not receive Financial Assistance, you will be responsible for making your own reservations at the Caribe Royale or elsewhere in Orlando. Again, you can contact the hotel reservation line at 407/238-8000 to reserve a room in The Family Café block.

The Family Café and its Planning Committee are hard at work planning a fantastic event that is sure to engage you and your family, while providing you with useful information and access to all manner of resources. We hope you can join us this June in Orlando for another serving of collaboration, advocacy, friendship and empowerment!

Gretchen Everhart is a district wide school for children with moderate to severe special needs. From what I have heard from parents who have children there, they do a wonderful job. They have programs from preschool through high school. They provide transportation from throughout Leon County.
