A week ago I visited Tallahassee on business. I noticed, while I was there, that there wasn't much going on in the center of the city. There was a number of places open with outdoor seating, during the day and at night, but hardly no one was there.

Is the Capitol area always like this? It's a very nice looking area. So close to FSU and FAMU.

I just remembered, while I drove around the entire city. I saw an area of apartments that had barbed wire fencing. It was close to FAMU. It wasn't a large complex, it was just a small area, maybe a 1 block area of small apartments. I have never seen anything like that before in other cities I visited. The gates to get in were all open at the time, but seeing barbed wire in front of homes gave me a weird feeling. Was this an area from the past?

Yup, and the OP visited a week ago. That'd be why.

obviously, you 2 don't live in Tallahassee, because when I was there, I saw hundreds of students walking around the entire campus. who knows how many were still inside the different red brick buildings.

Hate to be Capt Obvious but it is summer semester and while you saw hundreds of kids, if you return at the end of next month you will see thousands of kids!

Come back in football season and it will be tens of thousands of people......

As a graduate of FSU, the school is known for being a "party school," especially if you're part of Greek life. During my 4 years there, I always had something to do, there was always a party or event going on, and the campus was full of people. I also know people who went to FSU who weren't the party type, and spent their time doing other things, like going to the Rez (for kayaking and other outdoorsy stuff.) It's also summer so you won't find that many people roaming around the campus. I haven't been back to Tallahassee in almost 3 years and I know a lot has changed since then. However, as far as the capital itself, you'd think it would always be busy since it is well... the capital, but that's not actually the case. Parts of the city are beautiful, and I've heard that the campus has changed in these last few years to look even better than when I was there... but other parts are pretty sketchy.

Time your next business trip to Tally around sorority bid day. Really can't go wrong with any of them, but I personally prefer the women of Delta Gamma and Kappa Delta on the FSU campus:
