Hello! I am looking to attend FSU for a second Bachelor's in English Literature in the Fall of 2016. I really like how they additionally offer a Master's and Doctorate in the same field, which is the primary attraction. Also, the tuition is significantly less expensive than the University of Rhode Island and Arizona State, the two other schools I'm looking at. But I've got some questions. What is the cost of living like? More specifically, what is the rental market like? I will be on a pretty limited/strict budget. I'm really just looking to rent a studio apartment, nothing fancy. What are the best areas to live in? By best, I mean pretty safe and quiet. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

FSU is a good school and Tallahassee is nice. I think you will enjoy it.

Cost of living depends on how you choose to live. Their are plenty of rentals available, however if you want to live away from the college side of town, i recommend you check out midtown area.

A small word of advice - it's looked down upon to earn your PhD at the same school as your Bachelor's and will count against you if applying for teaching jobs.

There are a number of apartments near campus within a 500-900/month rent range. However, you will undoubtedly have noisy neighbors.

As for the town itself, if you don't have a car you'll be limited to the area near campus - good for access to entertainment venues and restaurants - but maybe not such a good thing if you plan on applying for jobs and internships in town.

As I stated earlier many times, FSU is great for undergraduates of ages 18-22. Graduate students in the mid 20s and beyond start to feel out-of-place. But it also depends on your department and financial aid. This question is a couple of years old and likely no longer relevant to the poster though.

However, although I personally was a demographic mismatch with Tallahassee and FSU, I still respect the people and community. I moved back to Arizona last February and love it. I hiked up Piestewa Peak (a local mountain) this morning and got a spectacular desert workout and mountain view of Phoenix. I am reinvigorating the mountain running speed I had before I moved to Florida long ago in 2002 and returned in 2017.

But I do get flashbacks of Tallahassee, FSU, and the campus gym (the "Leach"). This song reminds me of Tallahassee in 2005 when I went to the Leach daily and worked for the state. Best wishes to those who still live there.

I sometimes wonder if Jim Morrison got his idea for the song "Wishful Sinful" while an undergraduate at FSU. Morrison appeared in an early video for FSU when he was an undergraduate on campus. I was surprised.
I'll bet he partied on West Tennessee St. back in the day with frat guys and FSU girls. I wonder if he had sung
in an early band out by Railroad Ave.

He withdrew and moved to California. The rest is history.
