You are right about Northen Nevada. It's the opposite from Las Vegas. We're in a small town with the most beautiful views of the Sierra Nevada mountains and friendly people. Not that many Mormons thou. But being in the high desert we can't grow much and the land is very expensive.

We may consider other states as well.
Thanks for your input.

We may look in Ga, SC and Al. Where in NC do you have in mind? Why can't you grow much in Florida in the summer? Because of the scorching sun?

Thanks Tominftl!

Lol, I live in the south. Not prejudiced against them. I defend those people daily in the politics thread and we share alot of the same values actually. It simply is what it is. A drastic change in lifestyle. Somebody from Northern Nevada is not going to understand the lifestyle, politics, and mentality of somewhere like Tallahassee (where I've lived btw). I wouldn't encourage anyone to make that kind of move. Not to mention, Tallahassee's economy isn't exactly bustling. I don't think it's a good move.

I am glad that you defend Southerners, I am a bit defensive admittedly. I grow weary of the sterotypes presented on TV of the South, stuck in 1920 segregation, all the ladies running around saying " I do decare", uneducated insular dolts who have never left the county (and never wear shoes) and that use y'all as a singular LOL

Northern Nevada is a very rural area and would share many characteristics of rural North Florida. The climate is vastly differnet. I would imagine that compared to a place like Elko NV, Tallahassee would be bustling. The OP seems to want a more rural area within an hour of a larger place. Some of the towns in North Florida not far from Tallahassee, Gainesville or Jacksonville seem to fit the bill.

Don't move here. If you believe you do, go watch about 10 hours of the Dukes of Hazzard non-stop then ask yourself "do I really want to expose me and my family to that kind of mindset?" You cannot imagine the degree of backwardness in north Florida, south Alabama, south Georgia in mentality, politics, everything. There is nothing here on your day off unless you like to go to state (Florida State) football games and get drunk. There is zero culture except for big trucks with big tires flying confederate flags going mudding (look it up) or going to the Civil War reenactment. The KKK has infiltrated the police departments. They plot murders on former black inmates here. You'll get the enjoyment of driving past slaves quarters that the locals keep up to date as shrines to the good old days. Google the Tallahassee Police Department and you be amazed at the incompetence and corruption and conspiracy to violate innocent people of the US Constitutional rights. One night a police Sergeant came to my house and told me my dog was barking too loud. I told him it wasn't my dog as my dog was in the house and our nearest neighbor was 200 yards away. He said it didn't matter and he was going to come back with his gun and shoot and kill my dog, or just poison him. Go read about the 2000 presidential recounts and how the local judges tried to hand pick their buddy judges to hear the recount lawsuits and how one of their corrupt attorney's petitioned the Florida Supreme Court to change election law AFTER the election, forcing the US Government to intervene through the Supreme Court. Yep, these white trash rednecks in the courts here almost overthrew a presidential election because they wanted their democrat in office. The corruption is that blatant. Meth is everywhere, including in the police. Do some research and see how many local police are on their way to federal prison for corruption, which is everywhere. The main employer is government at various levels. I am convinced that in the real world the average southerner here would be unemployable, and I worked for the state. Billy Bob is a deputy sheriff while his sister Ellie May works for the Attorney General while his other sister June Bug is a deputy sheriff and their father is the old racist hillbilly idiot Boss Hawg State Attorney and on and on and on. You get the picture. The weather is miserable between May and September with 100% humidity and 100 degrees. Then it's miserable again from December to February with freezing cold. The allergies here are horrible from the live oak trees and the palm trees they locals bring in to attract sucker tourists into believing they are native (they aren't). In one of the counties the young people in the county got enough votes to force the county commission to remove the CSA Stars and Bars that flew beside the US flag at the courthouse. So the commission replaced it with a different CSA flag. It's just that kind of mentality here. Absolute inbred at all levels. Someone suggested Alabama. Yeah like that's a big improvement. Alabama judges are right now openly defying federal law. Read your history. It is always the United States government, through the US Marshals, US Army, or federalized national guard, that have to come to the deep south to force deep south state governments to stop terrorizing their own citizens by violating their state and US civil rights.

I highly recommend the Asheville or western NC area. If you're lucky enough to live in Elko NV why not move to Spokane or the southwest. But do NOT move to the land of the inbreds where it is always 1930 and always will be.

So far from our internet search Madison, Live Oak, Altha, Havana are on list. Or is there any small town that would fit our wish list?

Anybody live in these areas? Any ideas and advise?

Thank you!
Check out some of the areas around Brooksville out toward the Spring Lake area. Haven't lived down there for a few years but that was always a nice area. Lots of small farms, horses ect. It's really not that far from Tampa if you have to go there.

There are a lot of posts here that are totally negative and inaccurate. People tend to first write negative things, before talking about the positives.

Tallahassee is a great city, and a nice place to live.

Good luck in your search and I safe travels to wherever you decide to relocate to. However, I can't let you leave this forum thinking that much doesn't grow in the summer in Florida. Growing in Florida is pretty much year-round depending on the region of the state you're in and what you're trying to harvest. Contrary to CD opinion, there's not much that won't grow in Florida.

I know this is the Tallahassee thread, but consider Thomasville, Georgia, its just up the road from Tallahassee. Both towns are nice. That area has some of the best farmland around. I suspect you can find a 30 acre plot and house in your price range. Good luck.
