I might have an opportunity to move to Tallahassee. We have 2 kids (8 & 12) and want a house under $305,000 that is in a safe area, and is roughly 2500 sq. feet.

We homeschool but would consider an "accelerated charter school" or a smaller cheaper private school.

We are originally from Memphis but have moved around. We have lived in Houston, TX, a small town in Missouri, and currently in Cabot, AR (near Little Rock)..

We are really concerned about living in a good area (since we are from Memphis) because of previous experiences with resale and safety.

You will be fine. You can easily get 2500 sqft in a great neighborhood for 200k.

I can't help you on the schools, but try the Southwood neighborhood.

Default Northeast side of town

The schools in the NE side of town are generally considered the best, and you should be able to find something within your price range, especially given today's real estate market.

Just stay on the northeast-ish sidee of town and you should have no problems.

In fact, what you are looking for is right in my neighborhood. Check out the subdivisions north of I-10 east of Meridian and along Thomasville Road. There are many places that will meet your needs, the schools in that area are great, and crime is very, very low. I live just off of Kerry Forest Parkway, that's a good place to start looking.

Send me a private message if you have some particular question about the area.

The worst thing you can say about Tallahassee is that it can be boring if you are single and not college age. But for a family with kids, there isn't much better you can do in Florida for that. Outside of the area just around FSU and FAMU it is a very clean, green, and family oriented place.

One of Florida's best kept secrets, IMHO.

You seem to know the area, what do you think of Monticello? It is a reasonable drive into Tallahassee and there seems to be a lot of places for sale with some acreage. Would really like your objective view.

I don't have much personal knowledge of Monticello in particular, but I have co-workers that live out that way and they love it. It is a reasonable drive to Tallahassee on Highway 90 (and scenic too, this is one of the prettiest parts of Florida).

My view is if you want lots of acreage for your Southern-style plantation, you can't go wrong with that area. Schools, on the other hand...you will be better off living in NE Tallahassee.

But - the thing is, you can get all of that and only be a few miles from downtown - in other words, you can live "in the country" and only be just outside the city limits. Check out the area just north of me along Roberts/Bradfordville Road, especially east of Thomasville - rolling, hilly, beautiful countryside stretches pretty much from Tallahasee's eastern border all the way to Jacksonville, so you don't have to live all the way out in Monticello if you wanted the same thing, just closer to town.

I was always partial to Southwood, because of its massive green spaces, parks, etc., public pool/waterpark, and lots and lots of families and kids.

It's the kind of place I would have liked to have grown up as a kid.

It is nice, and has the virtue of being new and very well planned.

I'm not so keen on the cookie-cutter, zero lot line houses they put out there though...and the schools aren't quite as good as the NE quadrant.

It's funny but just a few years ago that whole area was nothing but farmland and forest.

My husband would be working at the airport Southwest of town...is that a good area?

I know that in Memphis and Little Rock the areas around the airport are infamous for crime....................

No, it isn't.

You would be better off living on the north-northeast side of town, but Southwood in the southeast quadrant is new and quite nice - and probably more convenient to the airport.
