Hi,

We are considering relocating from the Dominican Republic. We have been missionaries here in the D.R. and I have a job possibility. My two boys are bi-lingual but there does not seem like there is much of a latino environment in Tall. I am afraid they will lose their spanish. Am I wrong?

There are many Latinos in Tallahassee. Every school in the city has a percentage of Latino. I don't understand what you mean by "lose their spanish" if you mean speaking spanish, then yes, but middle schools and high schools have spanish classes, here.

As long as both parents speak spanish in the house, your children shouldn't lose the language.

Yes, Tallahassee has a very small Latino population. It's a mostly black-white city. If I remember correctly, Tallahassee's Wal-Marts have their signs in English only, which we haven't had in Tampa for years. If you're looking for a Latino community, you'll find it, but it will be very small.

Default Latino

I'm not even sure what "Latino" means these days. Is it anyone whose heritage is from any Spanish-speaking country? Mexican or Central American? South American? Caribbean?

I ask that because there are significant differences between Mexicans and Cubans, as well as those who were born in the U.S. versus those who just entered the country a few months ago.

Having said that, TLH doesn't have a significant Spanish-speaking population of any background. I agree with one of the statements above that it is a black-white town. Some Asians due to the university presence, but black-white are the general influences of the area.

I'm familiar with the Cuban/Caribbean influence of south FL and the Mexican influence in parts of the metro Atlanta area where I now reside, and TLH doesn't have much of either.

Compared to larger Florida cities, yes the Latino population is small. But when you compare it to other cities that aren't in Florida, its actually pretty high. I moved here from new Orleans where there's almost no latino population, and I thought there were a lot of latinos here, so go figure.
