My wife and I will be relocating to Tampa in the next year as she starts her fellowship at Moffitt Cancer Center. Any suggestions on places to live within maybe 20-30 minutes of the hospital? I know there are several general threads on places to live, but any suggestions from people who maybe work at Moffitt or know that general area fairly well would be great as my wife will be working some pretty long hours and need to be fairly close to work. We are still fairly young (28 and 33) with our first child on the way, and will probably be looking to rent. Obviously a safe area is a big priority, and proximity to shopping/restaurants would be great. Thanks in advance for any help, we are extremely excited for the move (we are currently in Cleveland and I hate it here) and look forward to enjoying everything Tampa has to offer.

The obvious location would be in New Tampa, Zip 33647. Good luck and welcome in advance!

Lutz or Tampa Palms - not far commutes - should be able to find something nice. Look for places along Bruce B. Downs. Personally, I'd look for a place north of Lettuce Lake Regional Park (Tampa Palms).

BTW. As you know -Moffitt is highly regarded by our community - appreciate all that people like your wife do for patients who are unfortunate to be dx'd with cancer.

Good luck Madison77. My best friend finished his fellowship for USF a year ago and is an attending doctor there. You'll probably run into him here and there.

Does anyone have a suggestion for me and my mother. She has to relocate in Tampa near Moffitt, she has four minor children. She has not been working since October 2011, and I will have to at least find her a three bedroom. Since I will be footing the bill, does anyone know of any programs, or apartment buildings that would give a big discount? I desperately need help.... She will be getting a bone marrow transplant, she was diagnosed with Luekemia in October 2011...

I agree with 33647. Look at the communities right off Bruce B Down BLVD. I personally like North of I-75. You will be very happy with the selection. Nice area, newer, modern, everything you need right there and your wife will have a nice drive right there!

Ishanta, the Moffitt social workers help with housing for BMT patients. Have you called them? There is also Hope Lodge, but I am not sure of the details for the children. Call Moffitt and they will direct you (813) 745-4673. good luck.

Madison77, the immediate area around Moffitt is a high crime, impoverished area. It used to be called "suitcase city" because of its transient nature, but is now being referred to as the 'university area." It started with substandard housing meant for USF students, and then became the housing for the poor.

The suggestions offered so far are good and the usual place temporary medical staff live, but traffic is a problem in that part of town, and crime is not too far away. I live 9 miles away in the "carrollwood area" and there are apartments around here, and I would venture to say the crime is much lower. I leave my house at 6:22pm and arrive, park and walk in by 6:45. Not too bad. Day time is different, plus parking is for an annual fee and might involve a shuttle. (USF has limited parking as it is land locked.) You might want to fly in for a long weekend and check it out.

Oh, BTW, there is a daycare center right on the Moffitt campus for the staff, but I am not sure of availability and such. Good Luck.

Whatever you do, dont live in the area immediately around Moffitt. It's in "the red zone". See my maps.
