My wife and I (and 55lb dog) are looking to move to the Tampa/St. Petersburg area in the next couple months. Does anyone have a suggestion for the best parts of town? Suburbs? We'll probably have about $1600 a month for rent. If anyone knows of any great apartment complexes (gated?) or areas to rent nice houses, it would be most appreciated.

Where is employment? You do not want to live in St. Pete and work in New Tampa or visa versa. What else is important to you?

There are a ton of great places to live it is a matter of finding the right area

I'd live on Harbour Island or in the Baywalk area of St Pete.

Sorry that I was so vague. We will be working out of McDill, AFB. We're both in our early 30's and no children (not planning on any either). Nightlife isn't that important, but we'd like to be close to decent restraunts and shopping. We'd like an apartment complex that's gated (for now until we buy a house). We currently live 40 minutes outside of DC and travel in towards the city for work, so I don't think that Tampa traffic will be too bothersome after having dealt with DC traffic for several years. We'd like to avoid shadier parts of town, etc.

Girlfriend and I (and 2 dogs) just moved to south Tampa a couple of months ago, near Hyde Park. Close to shopping/restaurants. Feels safe. We love it.

The Post Properties are usually nice. They have two locations that might work for you: Hyde Park and Rocky Pointe. You can also look at Phillips International and Millenium Westshore. Another nice newer place is Casa Bella on Westshore. I'm not sure about pet restrictions, though. Good luck; hope this helps!
