Thanks for all the replies.
Now he has decided to move a little further north to Spring Hill.
He said it seems as if a lot of inexpensive places in clearwater = ghetto.
We aren't ghetto.
We are both 33 and come from white, middle income families.
However, unlike most of our friends/siblings, our family doesn't give us money to help out with a down payment on a mortgage. Mainly because my husband refuses. He likes to do things himself. Sometimes I think it's a little stubborn, especially during these difficult times.
But I feel the best option is to perhaps go down for a week or so & stay in an extended stay place until we get a feel for the best area.
My only hesitation is the type of people that stay at the extended stay places.
Having 2 children under 3, I don't think I'd sleep a wink worrying about sex offenders lurking!

Ghetto? Are you kidding me?! There's not an ACTUAL ghetto area in the entire town. Clearwater is a beautiful, safe, and fun place. Sure there are nicer LOOKING places than others, but as far as safety is concerned, you have nothing to worry about. If your husband thinks parts of clearwater are truly 'ghetto' he needs to travel around America a little bit more. Anyways, maybe you should check out safety harbor.

Default Lots of safe places to live in Clearwater

Truly, there are lots of safe places to live in Clearwater. If you are looking at apartments, pay more for a better place, and don't even consider any that accept Section 8 bene's.

Clearwater is a big enough city that you can find lots of safe places, as well as a few that won't feel quite as comfortable for you.

And I honestly believe that you can probably find a realtor who WILL steer you in the right direction. Just don't trust them completely. As always, verify information that you are getting from people that you don't know well enough to trust completely.

Good luck, and welcome to Tampa Bay!

This is a very nice place to live in Clearwater. I lived there when I first moved to the area.

Clearwater equates to ghetto and you chose Spring Hill??
Oakey-dokey!

I drove to Spring Hill to pick up a Lawn Mower and Weed Whacker I found on craigslist. I live in Mid Pinellas... not too far south of Clearwater. That was a loooong haul up to Spring Hill and it didn;t appear much was up there.

With that said, obviously people like it in that area otherwise people wouldn't be living there. Frankly, you'll probably get 'more home for your money' in Spring Hill and it will be newer as well. But expect to spend those extra savings on Gas and Tolls.

It all depends on what your needs and wants are.

You picked Spring Hill over Clearwater? I guess it takes all types. Clearwater has its lower-income neighborhoods, but they're generally the residential neighborhoods immediately outside Downtown. Take a drive around some of the tree-lined neighborhoods around Clearwater High and you'll find lots of unpretentious, well-kept middle-class homes.

I'd never want to live up in Spring Hill. It was designed as a retirement community, if I remember correctly. US 19 is just sprawly commercial stuff. That and there's no direct way down into Pinellas. There's US 19, but I'd like to pass on all that traffic, especially once you hit Southwest Pasco.

Is no one else offended by aah's pride at being white, her slam toward Mexicans?

Who would want this person as a neighbor?

Pity her two kids.

Vital, interesting, desirable places to live (NYC, home of the multi- million dollar 2 bedroom apt. for example) are sought after in large part for because of their diversity --- plenty of immigrants, Asians, African Americans.

Wanting to be only with other white people ---- that's ghetto!

Where is she showing white "pride" and slamming Mexicans? All she said was that she didn't want to live in a ghetto. Ghetto =/= minorities.

Regardless, some people feel more comfortable living around others of their own race. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, just a different lifestyle. I don't really get the issue here.
