Dear readers,

My fiance and I, currently, are settling in. So, far so good.

After moving to Tampa three-weeks ago, she has a full-time job, making just about the same as she was back home, and I just got a part-time job, making about the same as I was back home--the kicker, no taxes so the paycheck will be a bit nicer!

Anyway. We're looking for a local bank. I'd prefer a credit union but I know some are tough to become apart of if you don't have residency and a decent amount of income.

We wont do Bank of American, have a bad history with them.

Any suggestions? We live on Waters Ave about a half mile from Veterans Highway.

Thanks.

Suntrust banks seems to be all over the the place and convenient- but it depends on you and what you need ---free checking? No ATM fees, etc. For me, no ATM fees is the most important convenience. Are there any in your area?

Check out the JDPower ratings for Banks in the South East. I personally like Chase for overall satisfaction.

Suntrust seems to have okay online - I move money between a second out-of-state bank that I have with no problems. In all my years of banking, I can't ever recall having problems with a bank like people mention - the only thing I try to avoid is service fees (checking, ATM, transfers, etc). Suntrust seems okay for all my needs.

Many CUs will allow you to join them. Some you can join by becoming a member of a certain non-profit group which usually cost less than $20 a one time fee. The interest rates are much better. BayGulf does have a min balance for no fee IIRC

Here is info from BayGulf Credit union.
