Welcome to Facebook
What you may not know...he didn't just do for the Tampa Bay Community...he provided for MANY places. Even in Boston his charitable donations were received annually. He didn't boast about his giving...he gladly helped without asking for recognition, though he would be recognized when someone in the media was made aware. I have a lot of respect for the man, regardless of his BBL controversies. Personally, he was such a nice man.

Take a drive though Tampa and you are bound to see something named after him. He has a High School, and stadium, a wing of St Josephs hospital, and im sure a few little league parks named after him. He also owned American Ship Building, which he brought to Tampa from Ohio. With George, it was more than just baseball.

I do not like the way he bought championships by going after players who were top notch players and had the money to do so while other smaller market teams suffered.

Because of his buying of players like he did and the way he changed free agency it hurt small town teams almost like a monopoly.

I still today wont give them credit for the 4 championships they had in the late 90's because of him buying off players and last years was even worse.

With that said, the man inside was always willing to give to his community and to anyone who needed it. Therefore like others have said, did not like him for what he did to baseball but his open heart to the Tampa area is shown as you drive through the area and know what part of him is there.

He touched many lives in both Tampa and NY with his giving so I wont fault him for buying all those championships.

May he RIP and the Yankees lose every game.

He will be surely missed in the bay. His 2 sons hopefully will continue to be as generous as he was in the Tampa Bay area.

Not surprised at all with most of his family living right here in Tampa Bay, makes sense to me.
