Marine captain arrested in fatal I-275 wreck

How would you like to be minding your own business, driving down the interstate and a DUI comes at you while he's driving the wrong direction?

Terrible accident -sad situation.

I can't call that an accident, that is a crash.

And the driver will most likely get a slap on the wrist. FL is a joke when it comes to punishing people for deadly DUI crashes.

Just last week in Hernando County a 20 yr old who did the same thing, was drunk on the wrong side of the road, killed a 42 yr old man(coming home from work), fled the scene....he got 3 yrs in jail.

But you can get 4 and 5 DUIs here and not lose your license. In many states the first time and you lose your DL and then get a restricted license. They don't play around.

It also takes FOREVER for them to get sentenced, the one I mentioned happened 2 yrs ago.

So he will be 23( if he even serves his full sentence) meanwhile he robbed a man of what could have been another 30 to 40 years of life.

Time to get tougher on DUIs in the TB area......this stuff is ridiculous.

Police: Teen girl charged with 3 DUI's in 3 weeks

A teen was charged with her third DUI in three weeks, and police say that two of her arrests happened within two days.

It's a distinction nobody would want to have, but one police say 18-year-old Kimberly McCarthy now has on her record: Three mug shots in 17 days for the same crime.

McCarthy was charged with three separate DUI's between February 24th and March 11th. Arrest reports show two of those arrests happened within two days.

I agree. It astonishes me how lax Florida is on DUI's. In Alaska they are very hard on them. Here are Alaska Laws. PLus they take your car and you either have to buy it back from the state or continue making payments on a car that you have the note on. lol

1st DUI Offense

First Drunk Driving Conviction

  • Driver License Suspension – Minimum of 90 Days
  • Imprisonment – Minimum of 72 Hours
  • Fine - $1,500

Second Drunk Driving Conviction

  • Driver License Suspension – Minimum of 1 Year
  • Imprisonment – Minimum of 20 Days
  • Fine - $3,000
Third Drunk Driving Conviction

  • *Class C Felony
  • Driver License Suspension – Minimum of 3 Years or *Permanent Suspension
  • Imprisonment – Minimum of 60 Days or *120 Days
  • Fine - $4,000 or *$10,000
In addition to the penalties listed above, a driver convicted of a DUI in Alaska may impose the following:
  • While the convicted driver is incarcerated or as a condition of probation or parole be required to take medication that is intended to prevent the consumption of alcohol.
  • During probation, the offender may not operate a motor vehicle unless it is equipped with a certified ignition interlock device. All costs associated with the installation and maintenance of this device will be paid by the convicted DUI offender.
  • The court may order the screening, evaluation, referral, and program requirements of an alcohol safety action program as a condition of probation or parole.

If a driver is arrested for a DUI they will be charged with a felony if, within 10 years of the arrest date, the person had been previously convicted of a DUI two or more times.
Felony DUI Third Offense

$10,000 fine and 120 days in Jail. Drivers license will be revoked for Life in Alaska.
Felony DUI Fourth Offense

$10,000 fine and 240 days in Jail. Drivers license will be revoked for Life in Alaska.
Felony DUI Five or More Offenses

$10,000 fine and 1 year in Jail. Drivers license will be revoked for Life in Alaska.

Alaska DUI / DWI laws extend to Vehicles, Watercraft or Aircraft.

3 years in jail is a harsh sentence for any crime, especially an unintentional crime. At least it is in the majority culture, where jail is a major social taboo.

That's a bit of an eye-opener.

Virginia would give him 20 years in the electric chair.

Surely you jest. 3 years for taking someones life? Someones father/daughter/husband/son, you name it, that person meant something to someone. We need to start cracking down on these things period. I also don't consider it unintentional unless that person was strapped into a chair and someone poured drinks down their throat until they were drunk and then forced them into a car and told them to drive or they would kill them. Seriously, would you think it's a harsh sentence if someone drove onto the sidewalk and killed your son or daughter? What has gotten into folks these days. Jeesh. Sorry for the rant. and roadtrip, I'm not mad at you or anything, just the comment.

This guy fled the scene... what a total coward! and took a life! 3 years is nothing... "unintentional crime" -- like "I'm sorry" is ever gonna take the pain away from the family of the person who died? Especially... if he had stayed and called an ambulance, maybe the person wouldn't have died.

Wow. The heat down there in Fla. must have fried the lawmakers brains by this point, that makes no sense.
