We've been seeing them up here in Orlando too. Mainly on our front alcove. I don't remember ever seeing them here before.

I'm curious too.

Posters on this forum Dying Slender Hinoki Cypress - Garden Clinic Forum - GardenWeb are calling it a ground beetle. I've never seen one before. Thanx for sharing.

Another on that forum is calling it a bess beetle and refers readers here: Family Passalidae - Bess Beetles - BugGuide.Net

Another poster there suggests it might be Scarites. Genus Scarites - BugGuide.Net

For the definitive response, you might ask the good people at What's That Bug? Insect identification .

I've requested identification help from them in the past with good fortune, even getting a response from a university entomologist who taught me much about my creature in question.

Florida has such interesting insects. Good luck in id-ing yours.

Identification aspect: pattern recognition.

I have bunches of huge beetles in my yard, but I haven't seen one segmented like that.

Just a common ground beetle in the scarite family I believe.
