Former Florida resident here trying to buy a car in Polk County. If you have your paperwork from a recent purchase (dealership Retail Buyer's Order, specifically) and wouldn't mind sharing some details, I would greatly appreciate it.

Specifically, I'm trying to figure out what an out-of-stater would pay for sales tax, tag, and title on the vehicle. I have the numbers my dealer sent me, but they seem VERY off the mark for what I've been able to gather through Florida tax and DMV resources.

Tax should be 6%; unless you are going to register the car in Florida you would not be paying for a tag. The dealer should give you a 30 day temporary tag.

I don't know Florida's sale tax rates for cards but I will assume that the 6% is correct.
Given that, if your home state's sales tax is higher than 6%, your home state will charge you the additional amount (ie if it is 7% then you would pay 6% to Florida and 1% to your home state).
