Does anyone know if there is a ferry from Tampa to St Pete? My husband will be working at Macdill and curious if there is a Ferry from one to the other. What is the driving commute like from St Pete to Macdill?

No ferries have operated in Tampa Bay since at least 1954. It depends on where in St. Pete you're driving from, but it isn't that bad.

Thanks! and yes that would be a GREAT addition to public transportation!
I "think" this would be a great incentive for a county to attract Macdill personnel, if I am not mistaken SOCOM and CENTCOM are located there as well. That means alot of contractors and Government workers and other military branches are there. But of course I am sure their are some great reasons why a ferry is not in place!

Really? 3 bridges and we need a ferry? Um- I'll take 275 or gandy. @80 mph vs a ferry doing 25-30 mph. Once you car is loaded on and secure- and offloadednat your destination, you have added an hour to your commute time vs driving.

Why don't we have flights from Tampa to st Pete while we are at it.

Do you really need to be such a jerk
If this is any indicator as the rudeness that is talked about, maybe we will fight the military as go elsewhere. Have a good day!

I agree. The only reason a ferry is ever used is the lack of a bridge. There is no logical reason to have a ferry when we already have three bridges that can get you there a lot faster. The Tampa water taxi might be a good transit idea for tourism, but not a ferry. I don't understand why anyone would think this is a better idea the a light rail system . We also are not at risk of losing Macdill because we don't have a ferry. It is not the county's job to attract personal for an AFB, its the military's and they will never have a problem doing that. That is one of the most ridiculous things I have heard in a while.

A ferry wouldn't be cost-effective in the area.

no one ever suggested that it was the county's job to attract military personel. Maybe it is one of the most ridiculous things you have ever heard, who really cares? All I wanted to know was if there was any type of ferry that went from one location to the other, after reading some of the previous links, I guess I am not the only one who ever thought of that ridiculous idea! My point with the military was only to say there are alot of stable incomes in that area, in times of recession, a community could use that to their advantage for economic growth! (oh I guess that is a dumb idea too) I never said anything about losing Macdill because there is not a ferry. I was under the impression that there is alot of TRAFFIC and my husband and I were just trying to find out what the freaking possibilities are so we can narrow down our possibilities for a home and not be in traffic for a freaking hour. My husband retires while we are stationed there and we may want to make that area our home for the next 20 yrs. Without being in the area, and seeing things first hand, I thought I would be able to gain enough information to at least know where to begin looking for a home for my family. After all the readings on here and advise on where to live, St Pete is not one that is being discussed for Military families. Maybe now I know why!
Also you call it water taxi, where we have lived it is called a ferry that transport people, not cars. Just saying! All I wanted was a simple yes or no. I would be nuts if I bought a house in St Pete, based on attitudes on this board, it is definetly not the place for my military family.
oh and my husband said helicopter flights would be much better than airplane or train!
