Okay! My DH already has a date to move to FL and that will be in Feb 2011. We have a high schooler and we need a place near the airport, with a good public HS. We have a house in NoVa that more than likely will be rented out since we can't sell it and my better half and child will move after the school year is over. DH will be working out of the Orlando Int'l airport. High schooler is an honor roll student and is definitely not looking forward to this move(freshman only) ,,,pls. recommend good areas to live in, great public school (can't afford a private one), any pros and cons.

We initially were thinking of Brandon(they said it's quiet and has some nice houses w/land) since better half might be able to get a transfer in Tampa. Better half works for the federal govt as well. I guess that's going to be a long commute. Any areas in between? Thanks a lot!

It's a ridiculous commute. There are so many nicer or equally nice neighborhoods in Greater Orlando. Save yourself from the frustration and just get a house in Orlando or one of its suburbs.

Also, there is an Orlando subforum.

I have to agree with Ferret111 even living in Lakeland is a long commute. If your DH works shift work I sure wouldn't want to have to drive that far to go to work late at night.

Why not check out Orlando, rent to get a feel for the area.

The Airport is on the OTHER side of Orlando, from Altamonte Springs is about 30 to 50 minutes....horrible commute...around Lake Nona would be your best bet....South Semoran Blvd has some nice areas an RE would best guide you...but living here to work in ORL is just crazy...you'd be spending a LOT of money on gas and tolls on 528 (or otherwise known as the Beach line formerly BEE Line)...which has tolls every 200 feet it seems and expensive ones no less.

Or search 32827 zip codes on Great Schools.org and Realtor.com for homes...

You must be confused. 528 has THREE tolls along its long route from I-4 to Cocoa. The total trip from one end to the other is a grand total $3.25.

Every 200 feet? Expensive? I think not.

However, the trip from Tampa to OIA would a lengthy trip. About 90 miles each way. One could take I-4 to 528 and 528 to the airport.

Would be much easier to live in Kissimmee or other area south east of downtown Orlando.

Every time we took the Bee line from down town we had 3 tolls to the airport, I am talking about the fact that the stretch from downtown to the airport is not THAT long yet there were 3 tolls.... it sure seemed like it was every 200 feet! I travel down Veterans and used to travel 429 from Apopka to I-4 and the toll plaza's were within several miles....the distance it to short for $3.25 sorry. IMO.

If they want to live in Brandon, then might as well work at TPA Intl....LOL

Yes, there are no tolls in Brevard. But you can go from downtown Orlando to Cocoa at a nice speed, no traffic lights, no downtown to contend with. I am sure you've been on Colonial Drive anywhere from I-4 to 436 and have sat through numerous traffic lights and in deep traffic. It's financially beneficial if you are going the whole route. By tolling the downtown area it should cut down on people who are just jumping on and off for a few exits to avoid traffic and leave the open road to the longer distance traveler who benefits most for the $3.25. Probably the old East West Expressway
would be a better choice for the trip to the airport, catching 436 Southbound from the E/W (I know that they changed the name on that road too).

I guess those folks who started the thread may have to find a sensible middle ground between Tampa and Orlando since they apparently will be working in those locations.

Right, if you go all the way to Cocoa, then that's Fine.......but we came down I-4 from Altamonte and hoped on that to get to the airport and were slammed with 3 tolls.....

Colonial drive is only for people with strong nerves! or the ones who love Thai food.....LOLOL If you pick it up by downtown....my hubby used to work off of 50 (Colonial Drive) and it was a mess at all times.....

Yes, to the airport, its an expensive ride on the "beachline". But again, it keeps the more local traffic off that toll road.

I lived very close to Colonial Drive. Did most of our shopping there.
Right around Sears.

Mills Ave/Colonial is more Vietnamese vs. Thai.
