So, if I am smart about my choice of neighborhood and do not go to questionable areas at night I should be okay? I will not have to worry about being mugged all of the time? That is the reputation St Pete has, at least with outsiders. I want to make sure that is not true because it looks like it has a lot to offer. And, if it is safe, I would rather be within walking and cycling distance to everything, rather than out in the suburbs.

It would be great to hear from more people who live in St Pete or who used to live there.

I've lived here for fifteen years and have never been mugged. It's pretty safe, especially if you are looking to live close to downtown.

Thank you Angler. Yes, I am looking to live near downtown. I am particularly interested in neighborhoods surrounding Crescent Lake. Looking at Google Maps those look like Crescent Heights, Euclid Place/St Paul, Greater Woodlawn, and the Old Northeast.

Do you have any particular neighborhoods you like or would recommend?

Default Shore Acres/Snell Isle

Shore Acres & Snell Isle are pretty safe. Surrounded by water, and many one way in roads. Been here 10 years - never a break-in in our neighborhood.

Definately one of the more dangerous areas of Pinellas county- always shooting and gang-banging.

No it is not safe. There is no reason to assume it is safe and the Tampa Bay area has real drug problems which lead to senseless crimes. You can increase your margin of safety if you practice common sense area and time awareness and are prepared to defend yourself. Bicycles- people on the trails have been attacked-people on the roads have been killed. Beware. The area attracts the good and the bad.
