Mom, dad, 6 year old, job transfer to St. Pete in May. Please help us figure out where to live. Heard Sarasota schools are great. What about St. Pete schools? Would love gated community, things for a 40'ish couple/family to do, somewhat close to a beach (within 20 minute drive maybe?) don't want to end up in a "small town" but not in a huge city either. Thought Sarasota might be the answer, but someone said the commute to St. Pete would be at least an hour, depending on traffic. Coming from St. Louis, Missouri, so we realize we may be in for a weather and culture shock and we're also used to having plenty of things to do. Not sure we'd want Tampa. Is it strange living in St. Pete...kind of looks like a peninsula...I mean, is it a different feeling living out on almost an island? LOL Sorry, I'm such a midwesterner.

Congrats on the transfer! I am from MN and we love it here. We live in Kenneth City, right on edge of Pinellas Park. It's an ok area. Pretty safe. I know many people will jump all over me for saying this but I'd stay away from South St. Pete. It is where most of the crime is concentrated. And I'm sure there are nice areas in South St. Pete but as a newbie it's hard to figure all that out. It's much easier to stay in other recommended areas. That being said, I'm a newbie myself, been here 6 months. Seminole is a nice area, good schools and relatively close to St. Pete (not sure where your job is located). And yes living in Sarasota and working in st. Pete would be a LONG commute!

Good luck! And you might want to get a bit more specific with the things your looking for in a neighborhood. Like renting or buying a home, price range, type of home, what things to you want near you (restaurants, parks, etc). Give all the info you can. People on this site are extremely helpful! I used this site for months before actually moving down here!

You don't want to commute to St Pete from Sarasota. The traffic can really be a mess. Also, it is rare, but sometimes the sunshine skyway bridge is closed. Mostly because of wind. You won't have any problems living on the "peninsula". It is difficult to provide specifics without knowing what kind of budget you have. You mentioned gated communities, so I assume that you have a higher budget than others.
