We've taken the plunge and made an offer on a house in Old Seminole Heights (the house is South of Hanna, East of FL Ave, West of 275, North of Hillsborough). The seller has accepted our offer but we still expect to wait months on the bank to get their sh*t together (short sale). Even if we don't get this house, I've fallen in love with the neighborhood and will most likely pick something else there. If you live (or have lived) in Old Seminole Heights or close to that area I have some questions for you:

1) Where do you exercise? A nearby gym? A faraway gym? something outside?

2) Where do you grocery shop? Rumor is the old Publix on Nebraska is ok in the daytime but too scary at night, true? The Sweetbay on MLK?

3) I shop at Target where I live now (Cheval in Lutz), where do you do this type of shopping if you live in Seminole Heights?

Thanks!!!

2) The Publix on Nebraska is fine at night. It's always busy and I think they have a cop there sometimes. There's the Sweetbay at MLK and Nebraska, like you said. There's also a Publix at Hillsborough and Habana and a Sweetbay at Hillsborough and Armenia.

3) The closest Target to Seminole Heights might be the new one on Dale Mabry just north of 275. There's also a Kmart on Florida at Waters.

thanks ferret.
Good to know the Nebraska Publix isn't so bad. I've heard even worse things about the Sweetbay on MLK, but guess its okay too since you mention you go there. Or were you just listing whats in the area not necessarily where you frequent?
And you'd recommend the Kmart on Fl Ave, really? It looks kinda sketch from the outside... but i've never been in there so maybe its nice?

This is the problem with Seminole Heights - the closest shopping is about the dreariest in Tampa. I hate all of those stores in that neighborhood, sorry. The old Publix there is probably the best of the lot. I'd stay out of that K-mart.

I'd drive a little bit up to Dale Mabry and go to the box stores there. My DD lived near Broward Elementary near just off of MLK and Highland. She use to go to the Sweetbay but it was Kash n Karry then.

I've never been in either of the Sweetbays, but the Nebraska and Hillsborough Publixes are just like any other Publix: clean and well-stocked.

Sounds like you got in a great spot. Get a termite contract!

There's a bike lane you can pick up on Highland that runs all the way downtown. You will be close to that. Going home is a bit trickier. I usually used Florida to Lake then cut east to Nebraska which has the northbound bike lane. Northbound has a bit more traffic. Can also ride downtown and toss your bike on a bus if you prefer. Anywho - best of luck.

2) Where do you grocery shop? Rumor is the old Publix on Nebraska is ok in the daytime but too scary at night, true? The Sweetbay on MLK?

Wholefoods and Freshmarket are nice.

Nebraska Publix is well lit and fine. Problem is it's small and not always well stocked (they can get cleaned out). The Dollar across the street I wouldn't hang out at. If you go downtown the Publix on Bayshore is nice. That said we shopped at that Nebraska Publix for years.

I never liked that location on MLK. Even with security I've just seen too many drunks causing trouble there.

3) I shop at Target where I live now (Cheval in Lutz), where do you do this type of shopping if you live in Seminole Heights?

You will probably want to goto University area or 275 and Dale Mabry area for shopping. It's not walking distance. Target is near Whole Foods.

Thanks for all the great advice everyone!

Someone at work who lives on Osborne St mentioned today that there is also a Farmer's market in Old Seminole Heights every 2nd Sunday of the months Oct- May, so we'll be hitting that up for sure.

Annddd apparently there's a bike ride thing for families & adults around the neighborhood which I'm super excited about

P.S. Innertuber, I didn't even notice the bike lanes when we were checking out the area, thanks for pointing that out. And a termite contract is on the top of our list!

Yep, the city installed those just a few years ago. Where's the farmer's market? Is it at the garden club or that park along the river?

Actually, neither...it is at that big brick high school that looks like Hogwarts.

Google says it's on Central Ave, south of Hillsborough and north of Osborne.
